Inshorts is a product that could have only come from someone born in the 1990s, with a love of speed. Its 60-word summaries of news and features work at the intersection of short attention spans and the fear of missing out. The topper in the news category of Google’s 2015 list of best Indian apps has notched three million downloads and $24 million in funding from investors including Tiger Global. Iqubal is clear that InShorts will not create content or run expensive newsrooms; he is building a content-discovery platform that will direct traffic to content creators’ websites. There have been murmurs about copyright violation, as the summaries on the app are largely unauthorised, but that’s not stopping the Noida-based company run by IIT dropouts. The push now is towards perfecting the product and personalising content. That should also help personalise advertising, an avenue to make money from the app.
