FY17 has not been good for India’s media industry, and HT Media was no exception. The late 2016 demonetisation and the wider economic gloom dragged down advertisement revenue, and HT had to lay off employees to adjust to the new environment. Then there was the closure of editions in Indore, Bhopal, Varanasi, Allahabad, and Kanpur. But then, there are two sides to a coin. The closure of a few print editions to focus on metros—a Pune edition was started—and the emphasis on digital—the Hindustan Times website clocked 100 million annual page views—shows Bhartia is willing to shake things up to adapt. Despite the recent departure of Hindustan Times editor-inchief, Bobby Ghosh, the digital push is expected to continue. The script is more or less the same for sister publications Mint and Hindustan, too. Yet, for now, the golden goose remains print, and the challenge would be to arrest the falling ad revenue.
