Floods are a natural calamity and India has witnessed many through its history. Here are some of the most devastating floods India has endured.
The Uttarakhand Floods (2013) is one of the most most devastating floods the region has seen in recent times. It was caused by many reasons, like multiple cloud bursts, melting of Chorabari Glacier and eruption of Mandakini river, which led to a massive flash flood and landslides. More than 5,000 people were killed.
This is one of the worst floods Bihar has seen. It submerged more than 40% of the state and was caused by heavy rainfall and led to more than 1,200 deaths.
Caused by record rainfall in the span of 24 hours, it left many people stranded, with over 14,000 homes destroyed and more than 1000 people losing their lives.
Caused by heavy rainfall which led to flash floods, it effected 1.8 million people, with atleast 470 people dead and 40,000 people displaced.
One of the worst floods in Kerala's history, it displaced about a million people, with over 400 lives lost.
Caused by continuous rainfall that lasted for over a week, it led to major flash floods and landslides in the region. Over 200 lives were lost and a large chunk of the region was submerged under the water.
The 2021 flood was caused by heavy rainfall and it killed over 250 people, with hundreds of people missing.
When Gujarat received 40% more than the average rainfall, it triggered floods in the region with over 200 lives being lost.
Also known as the Chamoli Disaster, it was caused when a part of the Nanda Devi Glacier broke off, releasing the water trapped under the ice. This caused a sudden flood with landslides which killed 200 people.
The sudden release of large amount of water into the Tapti river from the Ukai Dam led to 80% of Surat being submerged under water with over 200 lives being tragically lost.
