10 Bollywood hits that owes itself to originals from abroad

Aamir Khan's latest feature, Sitaare Zameen Par started the controversy, with audience pointing how the film owes itself to another film from Spain. But Bollywood has always borrowed. Here are the top 10 such films.

Baazigar (1993)

This Shah Rukh Khan thriller, known for its dark twist, was famous for turning a revenge drama into box office success. But little do people know that the movie was inspired from A Kiss Before Dying (1991).

Partner (2007)

This movie has gone down with moviegoers as being a frame-by-frame remake of the Hollywood cult classic, which starred Will Smith, Hitch.

Murder (2004)

This 2004 hit Bollywood thriller, Starring Emraan Hashmi and Mallika Sherawat, was taken directly from the thriller Unfaithful, starring Richard Gere.

Kaante (2002)

This stylish thriller, starring Amitabh Bachchan, was taken from Quentin Tarantino's blockbuster debut, Reservoir Dogs. The Hindi remake was so successful that even Tarantino called it a favourite.

Salaam-e-Ishq (2007)

Inspired from the hit Hollywood film, Love Actually, this Hindi film garnered praise for weaving multiple love stories into one movie.

Chachi 420 (1997)

This Kamal Haasan classic was inspired by the Hollywood comedy, Mrs. Doubtfire, which had starred the late Robin Williams.

Hum Tum (2004)

Taking its narrative arc from the hit rom-com When Harry Met Sally, the film got a lot of praise for capturing the essence of love that endures through many years.

Zinda (2006)

Taking directly from the South Korean cult classic, Oldboy, the Hindi version garnered praise, and notoriety, for its immensely dark themes and depiction of violence.

Ghajini (2008)

This Aamir Khan box office hit film was borrowed completely from Christopher Nolan's masterpiece, Memento. It performed well, but was critically panned.

Sitaare Zameen Par (2025)

Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par, scheduled to release on 20 June 2025, is also a remake of the Spanish film Champions (2018). Viewers pointed this out during the trailer launch of Aamir's latest venture.
