Sabyasachi Mukherjee has spent 25 years redefining Indian fashion — but his path to success was shaped by darkness, resilience, and unshakable dreams.
Born in Kolkata to a refugee father, Sabyasachi grew up in a modest home filled with struggle, grit, and quiet determination.
His father lost his job when the jute industry collapsed — plunging the family into financial distress that left young Sabyasachi shattered.
Overwhelmed by depression, Sabyasachi once tried to end his life. “I was unconscious… my mother slapped me awake,” he later recalled.
He now credits depression for giving him clarity. “If you’re not depressed, you’re not normal. It gave me purpose,” he once said.
From a small-town boy to a global style icon — his label has set trends, inspired generations, and built an empire rooted in Indian heritage.
In 2021, Aditya Birla Fashion bought a 51% stake in his brand for ₹398 crore — a milestone that marked his rise as a fashion mogul.
With jewellery and handbags raking in over ₹200 crore annually, Sabyasachi now dreams of making his brand worth $2 billion by 2030.
His designs have travelled from Chandannagar’s narrow lanes to red carpets and royal weddings — leaving behind a cultural legacy.
“I could’ve worked at Google. But I chose to create beauty,” he once said. Sabyasachi’s story proves that pain, when transformed, becomes art.
