At a time when all banks are struggling to deal with bad loans and mounting non-performing assets, Mulye has successfully led two of the biggest asset resolutions in the country, substantially reducing the stressed assets of her bank. An ICICI veteran (she started off in the group doing project appraisals back in the 1990s), Mulye has her job cut out for her. As head of wholesale banking, Mulye’s aim is to build a healthy loan portfolio— something any banker knows is easier said than done. Like other Indian banks, ICICI too is caught between rising bad loans and increasingly stringent provisioning requirements. This is reflected in the bank’s latest quarterly results, when net profit fell to below 34%. The market has not really punished the bank for this, given ICICI’squality of assets. Meanwhile, Mulye is looking at the refinancing opportunities in this market. It is shaping up to be a tough year for Mulye, but she can draw from her previous successful stints as managing director of ICICI Ventures, where she managed investments worth $2.5 billion, and earlier, improving the asset quality of ICICI Bank’s corporate loan book.
