OPPO India and Roland-Garros bolster their legacies through first-ever 5G video call for young tennis stars

At this year’s French Open, smart device brand OPPO and pro-tennis legend Guy Forget created history by ushering in the era of 5G in the field of sports. In the aftermath of COVID-19, many young talents of Roland-Garros ‘Junior Wild Card’ Series had missed the chance to play on clay.

OPPO, in association with Roland Garros, kicked-off a first-ever global 5G video call that connected young, aspiring talents from across the world with Guy Forget, and paved the way for a conversation about the future of sports.

India joined in on this historic call, thanks to the remarkable advancements made by OPPO India’s Hyderabad R&D centre. It made it possible for rising Indian tennis star Humera Bahermus to join in on an exclusive video chat with the retired pro-tennis player, alongside many other global young tennis stars.

OPPO India’s R&D prowess

OPPO’s Hyderabad R&D centre might be just two years old, but it has already been playing a major role in building next-gen technology for India and the rest of the world. This doesn’t come as a surprise though, since OPPO has always led the curve, foreseeing possible consumer needs, and working on innovations to make its device future-ready.

For instance, OPPO India successfully conducted the first 5G WhatsApp video call at its R&D centre earlier this year, displaying 5G band and speed, demonstrating fast movie downloads and Cloud gaming features, and further strengthening its vision to be future ready for 5G rollout. And now, with the ongoing pandemic cancelling most live sporting events across the world, OPPO India yet again stepped up to the challenge, and made it possible for India’s tennis star to be part of this unique global association.

A collaboration between two legends

The shared value of always being in search of excellence and constantly pushing the boundaries of innovation made both OPPO and Roland-Garros join hands for this unique association. Very few sports stadiums can carry the legacy of drive, intelligence and courage for more than a century now, and this trailblazing innovation is set to add even more value to Roland-Garros’ already illustrious legacy.

Innovation also defines OPPO’s brand philosophy, as it has been known to bring world-first innovations, setting true benchmarks in the smartphone industry. Given how Roland-Garros’ legacy compliments that of OPPO, it is fitting that they have both come together to provide this once-in-a-lifetime experience that can shape the future of budding tennis players.

Getting people closer together

The association not only empowers young talents and helps them explore new possibilities of combining the art of sports and tech, but has also found an innovative way of getting people closer in a world forcefully distanced by the shock of an epidemic. Moreover, OPPO is at the helm of ushering in a first-ever tennis at night experience, by equipping a number of main courts in the stadium with interactive lighting, all powered by OPPO and enabled by its stunning device, the Find X2 Pro. This is the first in Roland-Garros’ 129-year-old history, and showcases the great strides in innovation that both the legends have made.

As OPPO builds groundwork to reach out to more sport fans across the globe, and aims to deliver its cutting-edge technology to a COVID-impacted tournament, more viewers, players and fans will now get to enjoy the stadium in an innovative and interactive way. All of this just goes on to demonstrate how commitment to a shared vision can yield some stunning results, and redefine the conventional way of viewing sports.
