Electric Passenger Vehicle (PV) sales in India recorded a sharp acceleration in April 2026, rising 75.14% year-on-year (YoY) to 23,506 units, signalling a rapid deepening of EV adoption in the country’s car market, according to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).

The strong growth reflects improving product availability, expanding charging infrastructure, and rising consumer acceptance, with EVs steadily increasing their share in overall PV sales.

Tata Motors retains leadership; competition intensifies

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) led the electric PV segment with 8,543 units in April, registering a 77.17% YoY growth from 4,822 units last year. The company continued to dominate the market, backed by its established EV portfolio and strong dealer network.

Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) followed with 5,413 units, up 63.98% YoY, driven by rising traction in its electric SUV lineup.

JSW MG Motor India clocked 5,006 units, growing 32.54% YoY, indicating steady but relatively slower expansion compared to peers.

The data indicates rising competitive intensity, with multiple OEMs scaling up EV offerings to capture a larger share of the fast-growing segment, according to the auto retail body.

Two- and three-wheeler EVs accelerate transition

Electric Two-Wheeler (E2W) sales surged 60.73% YoY to 1,48,740 units in April, up from 92,538 units a year ago, highlighting strong urban demand and affordability-led adoption.

Among key players, legacy and new-age OEMs continued to compete aggressively, with companies such as Ola Electric, TVS Motor, Bajaj Auto and Ather Energy driving volumes, even as market shares shift amid pricing and incentive changes.

Electric Three-Wheelers (E3W) further cemented their leadership in electrification, with EV penetration in the segment reaching 60.38% of total 3W sales in April.

Within the category, Bajaj Auto maintained its leadership position, while Mahindra Last Mile Mobility and Piaggio Vehicles also posted healthy gains, supported by strong demand for last-mile connectivity and intra-city logistics. The three-wheeler segment continues to lead India’s EV transition due to favourable economics, lower operating costs and faster replacement cycles.
