The new SUV gives Hyundai another product in the 4-4.4-metre utility-vehicle space, where Maruti Suzuki has built scale with the Victoris.

Hyundai Motor India has opened bookings for the Bayon at an initial amount of ₹11,000, ahead of its festive-season launch, adding another SUV to its India portfolio as demand for larger utility vehicles continues to expand. The 4.2-metre Bayon will be positioned between the Venue and Creta, while its final price and launch date are yet to be announced.
The new SUV will enter a market that has become increasingly important for automakers. Maruti Suzuki Victoris, Grand Vitara, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Kia Seltos are among the key models competing in the 4-4.4-metre utility-vehicle space. In August, Victoris sold 12,978 units, while Seltos, Hyryder and Grand Vitara recorded 11,716, 8,234 and 7,808 units, respectively.
The broader 4-4.4-metre utility-vehicle segment expanded at a 21% CAGR between FY23 and FY26, with volumes rising from 3.94 lakh units to 6.96 lakh units, according to an ICICI Securities assessment. Hyundai's volumes in the segment increased from 1.50 lakh units to 2.02 lakh units over the same period.
For Hyundai, Bayon creates another product proposition in a segment where its portfolio has so far been anchored by the Creta. The strategic opportunity, therefore, is not simply to compete with existing models but to expand the company's presence in a growing part of the SUV market while creating incremental volumes.
An earlier ICICI Securities assessment estimated potential Bayon volumes at 4,000-8,000 units a month, depending on market acceptance. The estimate is not Hyundai's sales guidance.
The latest booking announcement has also settled some of the uncertainty around the Bayon's powertrain. The SUV will be offered with a petrol powertrain, paired with manual and Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT) options. It will be based on the Global K Enhanced Platform, which Hyundai says has been engineered for 5-star Indian safety standards based on its internal assessment.
A factory-fitted CNG version has been discussed in industry reports, but the latest official announcement does not confirm CNG. If introduced later, it could widen the Bayon's addressable market and bring it into closer competition with CNG-equipped offerings from Maruti Suzuki and Toyota.
The Bayon will also feature an in-built generative AI voice assistant, making artificial intelligence a central part of its product proposition. Hyundai has organised the SUV's positioning around intelligence, safety, comfort, performance and style.
Commenting on the bookings, Tarun Garg, Managing Director and CEO, Hyundai Motor India, said the Bayon integrates advanced technology, design and safety for customers seeking “more intelligence, more comfort, more confidence and more style”. He added that the SUV introduces a more human-centric technology proposition to the company's portfolio.
