Mahindra & Mahindra overtook long-time number two player Hyundai Motor India and homegrown rival Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd in FY26.

Homegrown automaker Mahindra & Mahindra has become the second-largest passenger vehicle maker by volume in the Indian market in 2025-26, riding on its SUVs.
Mahindra & Mahindra overtook long-time number two player Hyundai Motor India and homegrown rival Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd in FY26. Maruti Suzuki is the market leader in India.
According to sales data released by automakers, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd was the third-largest by sales in FY26, ahead of Hyundai Motor India Ltd, which dropped to fourth from second in FY25.
Maruti Suzuki India continued to lead the domestic market with its passenger vehicle sales of 18,23,129 units in FY26 as against 17,60,767 units in FY25, registering a growth of 3.54%.
Following in the second place was Mahindra & Mahindra with 6,60,276 units in FY26 as against 5,51,487 units in FY25, a growth of 20%.
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd was in the third spot with FY26 domestic sales of 6,31,387 units as compared to 5,53,585 units in FY25, up 14%.
On the other hand, Hyundai Motor India Ltd clocked domestic sales of 5,84,906 units as against 5,98,666 units in FY25, a decline of 2.29%.
Commenting on securing the number two position, M&M ED & CEO, Auto and Farm, Rajesh Jejurikar said, "Our ambition has been to be the number one SUV player by revenue and we are proud to have achieved that. We are equally humbled to be the number two passenger vehicle company for FY26."
Above all, he said, "Our priority remains unchanged: to create products that truly wow our customers and we are delighted to see that coming to life."
Overall passenger vehicle sales in India scaled a new high of 47 lakh units in 2025-26 as compared to 43.4 lakh units in 2024-25.
