India's Passenger Vehicle (PV) industry delivered one of its strongest monthly performances on record in July, with wholesale dispatches estimated to have risen 33% year-on-year to nearly 4.7 lakh units, aided by GST 2.0, lower borrowing costs, income tax relief and sustained demand for Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) and Electric vehicles (EVs).

Leading the rally was Maruti Suzuki India, which posted its highest-ever domestic passenger vehicle sales, while Hyundai Motor India, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) and Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) also reported robust double-digit growth during the month. The strong performance reflected healthy consumer demand across segments, with industry volumes continuing to benefit from favourable macroeconomic conditions and an expanding product mix spanning entry-level hatchbacks, SUVs and electric vehicles.

Maruti Suzuki clocks record domestic PV sales

Market leader Maruti Suzuki reported a 34% rise in total sales to 2,41,421 units in July, compared with 1,80,526 units in the corresponding month last year. Domestic passenger vehicle sales surged 43.4% to a record 1,96,203 units, while total domestic sales, including light commercial vehicles, touched an all-time high of 2,00,123 units.

The company's growth was broad-based. Sales of mini cars, comprising the Alto and S-Presso, rose to 12,634 units from 6,822 units a year earlier. Compact cars—including the Baleno, Swift, Dzire, WagonR, Ignis and Celerio—registered sales of 90,822 units, up from 65,840 units, while utility vehicles such as the Brezza, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Ertiga, e Vitara, Invicto, Jimny, Victoris and XL6 climbed to 78,851 units from 52,773 units. Sales of the Eeco van also increased to 13,896 units.

Commenting on the broader market, Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer (Marketing & Sales), Maruti Suzuki India, estimated that the passenger vehicle industry clocked 4.65-4.7 lakh units in July, up from around 3.5 lakh units in the year-ago period, translating into growth of nearly 33%.

"Fundamentally, these three tailwinds are very much there," Banerjee said, referring to GST 2.0, repo rate cuts and income tax relief for entry-level buyers, which have continued to support demand since last year.

On Maruti Suzuki's own performance, Banerjee said the company had witnessed "all-round growth across segments from entry-level small cars to SUVs" during July, adding that demand for its CNG models continues to remain robust.
