Uno Minda plans ₹1,415 crore capex; aluminium casting capacity to jump 162%

Auto components major Uno Minda has approved a combined investment of around ₹1,415 crore across four capacity expansion and plant consolidation projects, with the company planning to increase aluminium casting capacity at Hosur by 162% and shift part of its two-wheeler alloy wheel production to Haryana.

The projects cover aluminium casting, two-wheeler alloy wheels, moulding, and interior, exterior and sealing components, with new or expanded facilities planned in Hosur, Kharkhoda in Haryana, Bengaluru and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar in Maharashtra. The investments are expected to be rolled out over the next two to three years.

UNO Managing Director Ravi Mehra said the projects are backed by orders or firm demand visibility and are focused on expanding manufacturing capacity closer to customers.

₹510 crore Hosur project

Uno Minda will invest around ₹510 crore in a new greenfield aluminium casting facility at Thally Road in Hosur. The project will take aluminium casting capacity at the location from around 13,000 tonnes to 34,000 tonnes at peak, adding 21,000 tonnes of capacity.

The facility will cater to casting requirements across two-wheelers, passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles, including EV and powertrain applications. It will also have capacity to produce around 1 million high-pressure die-casting (HPDC) two-wheeler alloy wheels.

The project will be implemented in phases over three years, with the first phase expected to commence production by Q4 FY28. The company's existing Hosur operations are expected to be consolidated and relocated to the new facility by Q1 FY29.

Group CFO Sunil Bohra said the ₹1,415-crore capital expenditure represents a diversified allocation across product segments and geographies, with the aluminium casting expansion supported by demand for lightweight components from EV and advanced powertrain applications.

Alloy wheel capacity shifts to Haryana

Uno Minda has earmarked around ₹155 crore for a 3.3-million-unit two-wheeler alloy wheel facility at Kharkhoda. The project includes relocation of 2 million units of existing capacity from Supa, Maharashtra, with the first phase expected to begin production by Q4 FY28.

The company said the relocation will align production with customer demand in northern India and allow it to leverage infrastructure at its existing Kharkhoda manufacturing cluster.

Separately, subsidiary Uno Minda Kyoraku will invest around ₹80 crore to expand its moulding facility in Bengaluru. The expanded facility is expected to commence operations by Q1 FY28.

Toyoda Gosei JV to invest ₹670 crore

The largest investment among the four projects, at around ₹670 crore, will be made by Uno Minda's joint venture with Japan's Toyoda Gosei. Toyoda Gosei South India will establish a new plant at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar to manufacture interior and exterior automotive parts, airbags, hoses and body sealing components.

The facility, which will be the joint venture's third plant in India, is expected to commence operations by Q4 FY29. The project is backed by new customer orders, the company said.
