India’s ice cream market is expected to reach ₹57,500 crores by 2033, expanding at a CAGR of around 11% between 2025 and 2033, according to research conducted by IMARC on behalf of Tetra Pak.

Maharashtra remains the country’s largest organised ice cream market, accounting for nearly 15% of category value, followed by Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, and Gujarat.

Premiumisation moves beyond metros

Consumers are increasingly looking for differentiated ice cream experiences, with natural ingredients, artisanal offerings, and distinctive flavours gaining traction.

Indian flavours such as Alphonso Mango, Paan, Kesar Pista, and Tender Coconut are finding greater acceptance, particularly within premium portfolios, reflecting growing demand for products that combine premium positioning with familiar Indian flavours.

Premium consumption is also expanding beyond major metros into Tier-2 cities such as Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Chandigarh, and Indore, widening the growth opportunity for manufacturers.

While chocolate is expected to be the fastest-growing flavour through 2033, followed by vanilla and mango, product differentiation is increasingly shifting towards the overall eating experience.

Layered fillings, crunchy inclusions, chocolate coatings and contrasting textures are adding sophistication to ice cream products. Cone formats are expected to lead growth in the organised market by 2033, as consumers seek more varied formats and experiences.

The intersection of health and indulgence is emerging as another key trend. Low-fat variants and ice creams fortified with essential nutrients are expected to support category growth as consumers seek healthier options without compromising on taste.

Low- and no-added-sugar products are also expected to gain traction among health-conscious consumers. Premium brands are increasingly experimenting with vegan, low-sugar, high-protein, probiotic, and natural ingredient-based offerings to cater to changing preferences.

At the same time, quick-commerce platforms are changing how consumers access the category, with on-demand availability helping shift ice cream from a predominantly summer-led product to a more spontaneous, year-round purchase.

“India's ice cream industry is entering an exciting phase, with consumers seeking greater variety, sophisticated formats, and products that respond to evolving lifestyle preferences,” said Parmod Kandwal, Processing Director, Tetra Pak.

“For manufacturers, capturing this opportunity is as much about anticipating what consumers want next as it is about having the capability to bring those ideas to market efficiently, and on a scale,” he added.

Kandwal said Tetra Pak’s capabilities span the ice cream value chain, from product ideation and formulation to large-scale production. Its Made-in-India portfolio of ice cream solutions is aimed at supporting businesses across different stages of growth, from emerging brands to established manufacturers seeking to innovate, improve yields and expand capacity.
