IndiGo, the country’s largest airline, has announced an increase in fuel surcharge on domestic and international flights, citing a sharp rise in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices.

The revised charges will be applicable to all new bookings made from 12:01 am on October 6, 2026, (Tuesday) and will push airfares higher. For domestic flights, the surcharge increase will range from ₹100 to ₹350, depending on the distance. The airline has also revised fuel charges on international routes.

ATF prices surge amid Middle East tensions

IndiGo said ATF prices have remained volatile in recent months, particularly following geopolitical developments in the Middle East. The latest month-on-month increase in fuel prices has exceeded 14%, taking ATF costs to among their highest levels in the past decade.

“Given that Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) makes up a significant share of airlines' operating costs, this rise is expected to impact airlines' cost structures and network economics, including those of IndiGo,” the airline said in a statement.

The sharp increase in fuel prices has added pressure to airline operating costs at a time when fuel remains one of the largest components of an airline’s overall cost structure.

IndiGo opts for a ‘measured’ increase

Against this backdrop, IndiGo said it has re-calibrated its fuel charges across domestic and international flights. The revised charges will be included in all new bookings made after 12:01 am on October 6.

The airline said it could have imposed a significantly larger increase to fully offset the rise in fuel costs but has instead opted for a more measured adjustment to limit the impact on customers. “While offsetting the increase in fuel costs would have required a significantly larger increase in the fuel charges, IndiGo has implemented a measured and relatively modest adjustment to minimise the impact on customers,” the airline said.
