Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 has crossed the ₹300 crore India net mark in just seven days, becoming the fastest Tamil film to achieve the milestone, even as collections began cooling after an extended festive opening. The Nelson Dilipkumar-directed sequel has also overtaken Thalapathy Vijay’s Leo to become the highest-grossing Tamil film internationally. It shows the continued pull of star-led theatrical releases.

According to Sacnilk, Jailer 2 had accumulated ₹371.45 crore in India gross collections by its seventh day, with India net collections crossing ₹300 crore. By Day 8, its India gross had risen to ₹379.19 crore and India net to ₹323.76 crore, with final collections yet to be reported.

The film collected a net ₹6.56 crore in India on Thursday, October 22, across 7,079 shows, according to Sacnilk. Tamil shows contributed ₹4.23 crore from 3,098 screenings, followed by Telugu at ₹1.46 crore from 1,127 shows and Hindi at ₹87 lakh from 2,854 shows.

The pace of collections has moderated after a strong festive run. The film added ₹33 crore in India gross on Wednesday, October 21, down around 40.2% from ₹55.22 crore on Dussehra Tuesday. The decline followed an extended opening weekend and successive festival holidays that helped sustain weekday collections.

“A Rajinikanth film is what an event film looks like, in the turnout it gets and in the expectations people walk in with, and Jailer 2 has lived up to that in its first week,” said Ashish Misra, head of commercialisation at Cinépolis India.

The cinema chain recorded 3.5 lakh admissions for the film across its southern properties, with average occupancy of 60% since release. Tamil Nadu led the performance, followed by Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Kerala.

PVR INOX also reported occupancy levels exceeding 75% across its southern circuits, with most shows running house-full, according to executive director Sanjeev Kumar Bijli.

“The phenomenal response to Jailer 2 is a testament to Rajinikanth’s unparalleled stardom and the magnetic pull of compelling cinema,” Bijli said, while adding, “Such films bring audiences together in a way that only the big screen can, reaffirming the enduring strength of the theatrical experience. At PVR INOX, we are encouraged by this momentum and remain confident in the power of strong content to draw audiences to theatres in large numbers.”

Overseas collections add to the record run

Jailer 2 has also surpassed the ₹204 crore overseas lifetime gross of Leo, which had set the benchmark in 2023. Sacnilk's estimates put the sequel's overseas gross at around ₹205 crore within seven days, although another set of figures in the trade estimates places its international cumulative gross at ₹211 crore.

According to Sacnilk, the Middle East has been a key market, generating around $7.5 million, while North America contributed approximately $5.9 million. Malaysia, the United Kingdom and Australia have also supported the film’s international run. Trade estimates had placed the international gross recovery benchmark at around $22 million, though box office gross is not the same as the revenue ultimately received by distributors.

The film’s performance is also translating into substantial footfalls for cinema chains in southern India, where Rajinikanth commands a loyal audience.

Misra said sustaining those occupancy levels through weekdays indicated that the film had moved beyond the initial opening-day rush. “A film like this brings in people who don’t come to the cinema every month, and that is the audience every exhibitor wants to bring back,” he added.
