Reliance, Meta to build 168 MW AI-enabled data centre in Jamnagar

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) and Meta Platforms have partnered to develop an AI-enabled data centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat, marking Meta's first built-to-suit data centre project in India and strengthening the country's position as a global hub for artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Under the agreement announced on Wednesday, Reliance will develop a 168-megawatt data centre that is expected to be delivered within two years, with the option to expand capacity in the future.

Meta will lease capacity from the facility, which will support the company's global infrastructure and growing artificial intelligence computing requirements. The project also deepens the long-standing partnership between the two companies across connectivity, commerce and AI technologies.

Reliance said it will provide end-to-end services for the project, including design, construction, utility management, renewable power supply, network connectivity and managed operational services.

The company said the Jamnagar location offers advantages such as access to renewable energy, water availability, proximity to submarine cable landing stations on India's western coast and connectivity through Jio's fibre network.

The data centre will run on renewable energy and use desalinated seawater for cooling, reflecting the companies' focus on sustainable infrastructure.

“This is the first built-to-suit data centre capacity in India for Meta and represents a significant milestone in India's emergence as a global hub for AI infrastructure,” the companies said in a joint statement.

RIL Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh D. Ambani said the project demonstrates India's growing capability in advanced digital infrastructure.

"This partnership with Meta marks a transformative moment for India's digital infrastructure. Building India's first built-to-suit data centre for a global technology leader of Meta's scale demonstrates India's readiness to be at the forefront of the global AI revolution," Ambani said.

He added: "Jamnagar will become a landmark destination for hyperscale AI computing, and we are proud to partner with Meta to make this vision a reality."

Mark Zuckerberg, founder and chief executive of Meta, said the investment underlines the company's commitment to India.

"We're proud to be working with Reliance to build our first AI-enabled data center in India. This world-class facility in Jamnagar will help us scale our AI infrastructure globally while deepening our long-term investment in India's economy," Zuckerberg said.
