The Indian stock market delivered a mixed performance during Samvat 2082, with benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty ending the year nearly 4% lower, even as midcap and smallcap stocks bucked the trend and posted gains. However, a sharp pre-Diwali rally, which saw both benchmark indices surge more than 10% in the past seven sessions, helped the market recover from deeper losses and avoid what could have been its worst Samvat performance in 15 years.

The broader market, however, showed some resilience. The Nifty Midcap 100 rose 2.12% to 60,606.65 from 59,344.50, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 emerged as the outperformer, gaining 4.22% to 18,975.05 from 18,206.15.

Samvat 2082 was a challenging year for Indian equities, marked by heightened volatility, intermittent recoveries and a significant correction in benchmark indices. Markets faced sustained pressure from a combination of global and domestic headwinds, including escalating geopolitical tensions, elevated crude oil prices, rising US bond yields, a stronger dollar and persistent foreign portfolio investor (FPI) outflows.

The sell-off by overseas investors, driven by concerns over geopolitical uncertainty and global financial conditions, weighed heavily on market sentiment. The Nifty 50 had declined 10.3% in the year up to October 23, 2026, while the Nifty 500, Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 250 had fallen 7.8%, 4.5% and 3.7%, respectively.

However, a strong pre-Diwali rally changed the market trajectory. Since October 28, the benchmark indices recorded seven consecutive sessions of gains, marking a sharp recovery ahead of the Muhurat trading session. During this period, the Sensex gained 7,781.99 points, or 10.62%, while the Nifty advanced 2,331.50 points, or 10.27%.

The momentum was particularly strong in the week ended November 6, when the Sensex surged 8.82% and the Nifty gained 8.58%. This marked the strongest weekly advance for both indices since February 2021. The Nifty also closed at its highest level since February 27, moving back above the 25,000 mark.

Key triggers for Samvat 2083

As investors look ahead to Samvat 2083, the market trajectory will depend on a combination of global developments, domestic policy decisions, corporate earnings and liquidity trends. Axis Securities identifies eight key triggers that could shape investor sentiment and market performance in the new Samvat year.

Crude oil and geopolitical developments: Crude oil prices and developments in West Asia will remain key variables. A sustained decline in prices, with Brent crude moving towards $85-90 per barrel, could ease inflationary pressures, support the rupee and improve corporate profitability. Oil marketing companies, paints, aviation, tyres, chemicals and consumption-oriented businesses could benefit. Any de-escalation of geopolitical tensions could further improve investor sentiment.

Interest-rate trajectory: Monetary policy decisions by the Reserve Bank of India and the US Federal Reserve will remain important market drivers. Moderating inflation and stable crude prices could improve the outlook for interest-rate-sensitive sectors such as NBFCs, housing finance, automobiles, real estate and consumer durables.

FPI flows and rupee stability: A softer crude trend, a stable rupee and easing US bond yields could encourage foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) to return to Indian equities. Large-cap financials, IT and consumer stocks could benefit from a revival in foreign flows. However, a sustained recovery will depend on an actual improvement in investment flows.

Corporate earnings recovery: Investors will closely track quarterly results for signs of demand improvement, margin resilience, order inflows and management guidance. A stabilisation in earnings estimates would be an important positive signal for the market.

India-US trade agreement: Progress towards finalising the India-US trade agreement could provide greater clarity on tariff commitments and market access. A favourable outcome could support export-oriented sectors such as textiles, gems and jewellery, and engineering goods.

Union Budget and public capital expenditure: The Union Budget in early 2027 will be another important domestic catalyst. Continuity in public capital expenditure across infrastructure, defence, railways and power, alongside fiscal discipline, could support investment-led growth and improve sentiment towards capital goods and infrastructure companies.

Domestic liquidity: Continued systematic investment plan (SIP) contributions and domestic institutional investor participation could help cushion the impact of foreign selling. However, prolonged market weakness could eventually affect retail investor risk appetite.

Inflation trajectory: A sustained moderation in energy and food prices would support household purchasing power and give the RBI greater policy flexibility. This could benefit consumption-oriented sectors and the broader market.
