While speaking at the Advantage Assam 2.0 Investment & Infrastructure Summit 2025, Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran reaffirmed the conglomerate’s strong ties with Assam, highlighting its deep-rooted presence and future expansion plans in the state. Addressing the mega business summit, he emphasised the group's longstanding relationship with Assam, shaped in part by the late industrialist Ratan Tata’s connection with the region.

The Tata Group currently employs over 50,000 people in Assam and operates 17 hospitals. Tata Power has rolled out several solar projects and established 300 charging stations across the state, he said. The company is also strengthening its hospitality footprint, with plans to expand from two to seven hotels. Meanwhile, Tata Motors, Tata Steel, BigBasket, and Tanishq continue to maintain a strong presence in the region, he added.

Chandrasekaran said the year 2024 marks a defining moment for both Assam and the Tata Group, adding that the company’s semiconductor arm, Tata Electronics, has put the state on the global semiconductor map. The group's first assembly plant in Assam is a major step towards making India self-sufficient in semiconductor manufacturing.

"Semiconductor chips are the backbone of society, and countries worldwide recognise that self-sufficiency in chip production is a matter of national security," he said. Chandrasekaran credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision and proactive policies for driving India’s semiconductor ambitions under the ‘Viksit Bharat’ initiative.

"Taking forward the group's commitment towards the state, it will invest in another large electronics manufacturing unit soon," added Chandrasekaran. “This project, which will see an investment of about ₹27,000 crore in Assam, will create 30,000 jobs. It will be the cornerstone of modern industries," he said, adding that soon, cars, smartphones, and medical equipment will be powered by chips manufactured in Assam’s Jagiroad.

Beyond manufacturing, the Tata Group is investing heavily in skill development, partnering with institutions like the Tata Indian Institute of Skills to train Assam’s youth. The company also plans to equip three lakh households with solar power in the next five years and develop 1 gigawatt of renewable energy in the state. With these investments, the Tata Group aims to make Assam a key player in India's industrial and technological growth, said Chandrasekaran.
