Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday released ‘Defence Forces Vision 2047: A Roadmap for a Future-Ready Indian Military’, outlining a long-term blueprint to transform India’s armed forces into a modern, technologically advanced, and integrated military by the centenary of independence. 

The vision document, prepared by the Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff, lays out strategic reforms, capability upgrades, and organisational restructuring required for the armed forces to meet evolving security challenges and support India’s ambition of becoming a developed nation by 2047. 

Releasing the document at South Block in New Delhi, Singh said the road map reflects the government’s focus on strengthening national security while preparing the armed forces for future warfare. 

“This comprehensive blueprint will transform the Defence Forces into a modern, integrated and technologically-advanced military capable of supporting India’s aspiration to become Viksit Bharat by 2047,” the defence ministry said in a statement. 

Focus on integrated and multi-domain warfare 

According to the document, the armed forces will transition into an integrated, multi-domain force capable of operating across land, air, sea, space, and cyber domains. The road map aims to enhance deterrence capability while ensuring swift responses to a wide range of security threats amid changing regional and global dynamics. 

A central element of the strategy is greater jointness among the three services, with closer coordination in planning, operations, and capability development. 

“The vision emphasises jointness and synergy among the Services, promoting greater coordination in planning, operations and capability development,” the ministry said. 

Push for indigenous defence capabilities 

The road map also places strong emphasis on Aatmanirbharta in defence by promoting indigenous technologies and domestic manufacturing of military systems. 

The document notes that encouraging the development and adoption of home-grown technologies will strengthen operational readiness and simultaneously support economic growth through expansion of the domestic defence ecosystem. 

Phased capability development 

The blueprint proposes a calibrated implementation plan with short-term, mid-term and long-term capability targets. These milestones will guide institutional reforms, technological adoption, and strategic partnerships needed to build a world-class military. 

The document also calls for a “whole-of-nation” approach to national security by integrating military strength with diplomatic, economic and technological capabilities. Through sustained reforms and innovation, the roadmap aims to ensure that by 2047 India’s armed forces emerge as a globally respected and technologically advanced military force. 

Senior officials present at the launch included Chief of Defence Staff Anil Chauhan, Chief of Naval Staff Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of Air Staff AP Singh, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, and Vice Chief of Army Staff Pushpendra Singh, among others.
