WPI inflation rises to 9.92% in August from 9.78% in July

India’s wholesale price inflation rose to 9.92% year-on-year (YoY) in August 2026, up from 9.78% in July, according to provisional data released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry on Monday.

The rise in wholesale inflation was driven mainly by higher prices of mineral oils containing petroleum products, food articles, manufactured food products, basic metals, non-food articles, and chemicals and chemical products. The All India Wholesale Price Index (WPI) for August stood at 110.8, compared with 110.0 in July. 

Fuel and power inflation jumps 

Among the major groups, inflation in fuel and power rose sharply to 22.93% in August from 20.05% in July. The index for the category increased to 108.3 from 105.4 during the month.

Inflation in Manufactured Products edged up to 8.37% in August from 8.29% in July, while the index rose to 108.8 from 108.4. 

In contrast, inflation in Primary Articles eased to 7.76% in August from 8.52% in July. The index for the group increased to 118.1 from 117.2. 

The government said mineral oils containing petroleum products, food articles, manufacture of food products, basic metals, non-food articles, and chemicals and chemical products were the major drivers of wholesale inflation during the month. 

Food inflation rises 

Inflation in the WPI Food Index, which has a weight of 24.99% in the wholesale price index, rose to 7.05% in August from 6.65% in July.

The Food Index comprises food articles under the Primary Articles group and manufactured food products under Manufactured Products. 

The increase in food inflation adds to price pressures at the wholesale level, even as inflation across Primary Articles moderated during the month.

Rajeev Juneja, President, PHDCCI, said, "The latest movement in wholesale prices warrants close monitoring, particularly from the perspective of industrial input costs, business margins and competitiveness. The increase in WPI inflation has been accompanied by significant price pressures in fuel and power, manufactured products and selected primary commodities."

June WPI inflation revised higher 

The government also revised the final WPI figures for June 2026. The WPI index for June was revised to 110.3 from 110.2 in the provisional estimate. As a result, WPI inflation for the month was revised upward to 9.97% from 9.87%.

The final June WPI estimate was compiled with a weighted response rate of 99.3%. The provisional WPI estimate for August was compiled with a weighted response rate of 84.4%. The August data are based on the WPI series with 2022-23 as the base year.
