The company now operates nearly 50 wind and solar projects in India, exceeding 1.1 GW of renewable energy capacity.
Amazon will become water-positive in India by 2027, the company announced at the maiden Sustainability Summit on Wednesday, ensuring that the amount of water it replenishes to local communities exceeds the water it consumes in its direct operations.
“Amazon will continue to improve water efficiency across its operations in India, including at its fulfilment centres, corporate offices, and data centres, and add to its existing set of water replenishment projects by supporting projects in our communities that improve water availability and quality to water-stressed areas,” the company said in an official release.
However, the company's total water consumption in India remains unknown. Yet, this is the first time any FAANG company has announced an India-specific water target.
“Amazon is scaling water stewardship best practices across our business, which means using less water in all our buildings—from logistics sites to corporate offices and data centres—through more efficient fixtures, rainwater harvesting, wastewater recycling, and AI-driven leak detection through smart water monitoring,” says Abhinav Singh, Vice President, Operations, Amazon India.”
Additionally, the company will track the total water replenished in India and compare it against the water utilised in its logistics sites, corporate offices, and data centres to monitor progress.
As part of its water initiative, Amazon, in partnership with an environmental group SayTrees, will restore Yamare Lake near Bengaluru and Sai Reddy Lake near Hyderabad to address urbanisation-induced water challenges. Amazon has key offices and data centres in the two cities where the project has been announced.
Beginning January 2025, the project will involve desilting, repairing structures, and restoring bunds to boost water storage by over 571 million litres, enhance groundwater recharge, and reduce flood risks for local communities.
Alongside its water-positive target announcement for 2027, Amazon announced that it had achieved its goal of deploying 10,000 electric vehicles in India’s delivery fleet ahead of the 2025 deadline set in 2020 under its Climate Pledge to reach net zero by 2040. The company now operates nearly 50 wind and solar projects in India, exceeding 1.1 GW of renewable energy capacity.
