With a potential extension of the term for additional supply, the green ammonia is intended to be supplied through receiving, storage and distribution facilities being developed adjacent to JERA's Hekinan Thermal Power Station in Aichi Prefecture, Japan.

Giving momentum to India's green hydrogen ambitions, Hyderabad-based AM Green has secured a green ammonia supply contract for 70,000 tonnes annually over five years from Japan's largest power generation company JERA.
With a potential extension of the term for additional supply, the green ammonia is intended to be supplied through receiving, storage and distribution facilities being developed adjacent to JERA's Hekinan Thermal Power Station in Aichi Prefecture, Japan.
AM Green will produce green ammonia at its Kakinada facility in Andhra Pradesh, planned to be commissioned by 2028/29. Green ammonia would primarily be supplied to a business venture jointly to be established by Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha, which plans to utilise an ammonia bunkering vessel to supply fuel to ammonia-fuelled car carriers. This marks one of the first large-scale green ammonia-based bunkering initiatives globally.
"This agreement is an important step in advancing a practical end-to-end lower-carbon value chain for Japan, anchored by our power generation business and serving a broader range of industries. This allows us to connect diversified sources of ammonia with customer needs in Japan, contributing to Japan's decarbonization goals,'' said Irtiza Sayyed, JERA's Senior Managing Executive Officer and JERA Global Energy Solutions CEO.
''This agreement reflects the growing demand for competitively priced green molecules from India and reinforces the strategic role of our Kakinada project in supporting Japan's and maritime industries' decarbonisation ambitions. By combining renewable energy, large-scale energy storage and advanced green ammonia production, we are building a reliable and scalable supply platform for international markets'', said Mahesh Kolli, Group President and Joint Managing Director of AM Green.
Established in 2015, JERA produces one-third of Japan's electricity and is one of the largest LNG buyers in the world. The founders of Greenko Group established AM Green, which is backed by investors like Gentari and GIC. It is developing European-standard green ammonia projects across multiple locations in India, aiming to reach 5 MTPA capacity. AM Greens' one MTPA green ammonia plant, currently under construction in Kakinada, will be one of the world's largest green ammonia facilities.
Recently, AM Green was selected as the sole winner of the Asian lot in the H2Global auction run by HINT.CO GmbH (Hintco), securing a long-term purchase agreement to supply renewable ammonia to Germany. Over a period of 10 years, Hintco will purchase ammonia from AM Green for a minimum value of €585 million and may purchase additional quoted volumes using proceeds generated from the resale of green ammonia in the European market.
Europe’s first major binding India-origin green-ammonia deal came in January 2026, when AM Green Ammonia India signed a long-term agreement with German energy company Uniper. Uniper has agreed to offtake up to 500,000 tonnes a year of renewable ammonia from AM Green’s projects in India.
The first shipments are expected as early as 2028 from AM Green’s 1 million-tonne-a-year Kakinada project in Andhra Pradesh, which is under construction. The agreement gives AM Green an anchor European customer as it scales up its renewable-ammonia production capacity.
