Sun Pharma signs U.S. drug pricing deal; pharma stock falls 1%

Shares of Sun Pharmaceutical Industries fell over 1% in early trade on Tuesday after the drugmaker announced a pricing agreement with the U.S. government aimed at making medicines more affordable.

Under the deal, Sun Pharma will make medicines more affordable by extending “Most Favored Nation (MFN)” pricing to state Medicaid programmes. In return, the company will benefit from a more than two-year delay in Section 232 tariffs on innovative pharmaceutical products.

Following the announcement, Sun Pharma shares declined as much as 1.1% to ₹1,934.45 on the BSE, against the previous close of ₹1,956. The market capitalisation slipped to ₹4.66 lakh crore, with 20 thousand shares changing hands over the counter.

Sun Pharma share is close to its 52-week high of ₹2,047.55 touched on July 31, 2026, and a 52-week low of ₹1,547.25 hit on September 26, 2025. The pharma stock has risen over 12% year-to-date (YTD), while it added 24% in the past one year.

In an exchange filing this morning, Sun Pharma said that it participated in a White House signing ceremony alongside several pharmaceutical companies to announce agreements with the US government aimed at prioritising access to affordable medicines for millions of American patients.

Under the agreement, Sun Pharma will extend MFN pricing to state Medicaid programmes and also commit to MFN pricing for future innovative medicine launches.

"The agreement recognizes Sun Pharma’s investment in the U.S. market by delaying Section 232 tariffs on innovative pharmaceutical products for over two years. Further terms of the agreements remain confidential," Sun Pharma said.

U.S. remains key growth market

The U.S. is Sun Pharma's largest market for innovative medicines and accounts for approximately 27% of its global revenue, making the pricing agreement strategically important for the company.

Sun Pharma initially established its U.S. presence through generics and has increasingly shifted towards innovative and specialty medicines. The company is now the second-largest player by prescriptions in U.S. dermatology and has been expanding its presence across dermatology and immunology, cutaneous oncology and ophthalmology.

The company said the U.S. remains a key area of investment across clinical development, sales and marketing, as well as API and finished-product manufacturing.

Organon acquisition adds to U.S. exposure

Sun Pharma's latest agreement comes against the backdrop of its broader push to strengthen its US presence.

In April this year, the company entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Organon & Co. at an enterprise value of $11.75 billion. The transaction represents one of Sun Pharma's largest strategic investments and further increases its exposure to the US pharmaceutical market.

“Commitment to the U.S. market was further underscored earlier this year through Sun Pharma’s definitive agreement to acquire Organon & Co. at an enterprise value of $11.75 billion - a milestone that reflects Sun Pharma's continued investment in American patients, healthcare providers, and communities,” it said.
