When it comes to bike insurance, the cost of adding RSA to a base policy is minimal, and in some cases, it’s even free. Certain insurance companies now include RSA as a complimentary feature within their standard policy. Others charge a nominal fee, typically ranging between ₹1 and ₹99, making it an affordable yet highly valuable add-on for riders seeking extra peace of mind on the road.
Manas Kapoor, Business Head at Policybazaar.com said, "Currently, we are seeing the percentage of people opting for RSA whether it pre-bundled or opted in by the customers is ~10% which is on increasing trend every month. However, the numbers have almost doubled if we compare it with the first half of FY25 versus the second half of FY25 where multiple partners have introduced low and zero-cost RSA that is helping in increasing the adoption for RSA.
The cover comes with certain exclusions that vehicle owners should be aware of. Assistance will not be provided if the driver is under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the breakdown, or if the vehicle is being used for racing, motorsports, or any illegal activity. RSA is also not applicable if the driver lacks a valid driving license or if the insurer is not informed in advance about the breakdown. Additionally, misuse of the bike, failure to follow the owner's manual guidelines, or damage caused deliberately, through vandalism, or during a criminal act are not covered. It is also important to note that different RSA plans offer varied kilometre coverage limits and towing options, such as flatbed or regular tow trucks, depending on the insurer’s terms.
Many policyholders overlook RSA because they assume they will never need it. However, breakdowns can happen unexpectedly, and paying for individual towing or repairs can be expensive. Having RSA ensures quick, hassle-free assistance without extra costs.
"Customers are getting more aware of the importance of RSA and the insurers which are providing this at low prices are getting a boost. We are also seeing that many vehicles in the higher CC segment primarily super and cruiser bikes want to opt for comprehensive RSA covers," said Kapoor.
While in the two-wheeler segment, the claim incident ratio is relatively low compared to other general insurance categories, RSA is one of the most practical yet underappreciated add-ons in vehicle insurance.
