Adobe unveils new Photoshop AI tools, adds AI Assisted Editor in beta

Adobe has introduced a new set of Photoshop features aimed at giving users more control over image editing, including new lighting controls, AI-powered editing tools, and an optional prompt-based workspace.

The new Light Adjustment Layer adds controls for Exposure, Contrast, Highlights, Shadows, Whites and Blacks as a non-destructive adjustment layer, allowing users to make lighting changes within the Photoshop layers workflow.

Adobe has also introduced Instruct Edit with Masks, powered by Firefly Image 5. The feature allows users to describe an edit through a prompt without having to precisely select the area to be changed. According to Adobe, unmasked areas remain untouched, helping protect elements such as faces, logos and other brand assets.

Another new feature, Markup, allows users to draw directly on an image to indicate the areas they want to change. Users can mark areas for recolouring, draw arrows to indicate placement or sketch rough shapes for new elements.

Photoshop is also getting Dynamic Text, Shapes and Paths, which allows text to automatically adapt to custom shapes and paths. Adobe is additionally integrating its Stock Panel into Photoshop, giving users access to more than 900 million Adobe Stock assets from within the application.

Photoshop gets AI Assisted Editor

Adobe has introduced the AI Assisted Editor in beta as an optional workspace for prompt-based editing outside its Pro Editor workflow. It provides a dedicated interface and natural-language prompt bar alongside generative tools powered by leading AI models.

The AI Assisted Editor includes Prompt to Edit, Remove Background, Generative Expand, Remove Tool, Generative Fill, Generative Upscale and AI Markup. These tools allow users to make changes such as removing backgrounds, expanding images, removing objects, adding or replacing content and increasing image resolution through a combination of prompts and AI tools.

Users who prefer the existing Pro Editor can also access Prompt to Edit through Photoshop’s Contextual Task Bar. Adobe said the feature can transform an entire image using natural-language prompts without requiring a selection, with each result added as a generative layer in the layer stack to keep edits organised and non-destructive.

The new Photoshop features were announced by Adobe on September 1, 2026, with the AI Assisted Editor currently available in beta.
