Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei in New Delhi on Saturday, to discuss the company’s expansion in India and the rapid adoption of its AI tools. Amodei shared with PM Modi that the company’s offering Claude Code has seen usage grow fivefold since June.

“Glad to meet you. India’s vibrant tech ecosystem and talented youth are driving AI innovation that is human-centric and responsible. We welcome Anthropic’s expansion and look forward to working together to harness AI for growth across key sectors,” PM Modi wrote in a post on X.

PM Modi emphasised India’s dynamic tech ecosystem and the potential of its talented youth to drive human-centric, responsible AI innovation.

Amodei praised India’s forward-looking AI policies and commitment to using technology for inclusive development.

“Today I met with PM @narendramodi to discuss Anthropic's expansion to India—where Claude Code use is up 5× since June. How India deploys AI across critical sectors like education, healthcare, and agriculture for over a billion people will be essential in shaping the future of AI,” wrote Amodei in a post on X.

Amodei and co. also met Union electronics and IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Saturday.

“Anthropic CEO @DarioAmodei expressed the company’s trust in Bharat’s AI ecosystem and deep talent pool. He also committed to promote safe and responsible use of AI,” Vaishnaw revealed in a post on X.

Amodei was in India on the sidelines of the company’s first Dev Day summit in partnership with private equity firm Accel held in Bengaluru earlier last week. The company is already setting up a Bengaluru office by the end of this fiscal year.

“Bengaluru will serve as our second office in Asia Pacific after Tokyo, which will open in the coming months. This expansion will help us serve India’s rapidly growing AI ecosystem and reflects the increasing international demand we’re seeing for Claude,” the company said in a statement.

The invite-only event saw panels and showcases by country’s top developers, CTOs, and product leaders of their projects built using Sonnet 4.5 via Claude Code or the Claude API.

Companies and developers were asked to submit projects using Sonnet 4.5, building enterprise agents and vertical copilots, in areas like fintech, health, logistics, education, compliance, customer support, and HR. The top 50 submissions were invited to the one-day summit, with winners receiving Claude credits.

Several global AI startups are setting up their offices in India on account of massive demand of their AI models in the country. OpenAI announced establishing an India office in August this year, with policy presence already there in New Delhi. Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas told Fortune India that the company likewise intends to establish an India office, likely in Bengaluru or Hyderabad, within the next few months.
