This system processor is set to succeed the Snapdragon 8 Elite processor announced last year, which itself was a move away from numerical branding of the chipsets. The company claims that ‘Elite’ name will be only for the most premium and industry-leading processors by the company, that are focused on enhanced capability, experience and innovation.

Qualcomm currently has over 38 active design system processors with Snapdragon 8 Elite as the most premium offering. The Snapdragon 8 Elite debuted last year as the company’s standalone platform, unlike the high-tier system processors introduced previously including Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 and Gen 3. With the 8 Elite Gen 5, Qualcomm has skipped a few generations in naming its most premium offering for mobile phones.

The company has not called this a renaming strategy, like users had seen with Apple’s latest iOS 26 launch. The company’s naming strategy is reflective of the platform’s performance capabilities, launch timing and how each platform fits within the broader portfolio.

“It might look like we skipped generations, but the truth is simpler — and more powerful. Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 marks the fifth generation of our premium 8-series platforms since we introduced our new single digit naming and visual identity. By aligning with Gen 5, we’re reinforcing its leadership position and simplifying how consumers understand our product roadmap,” Don McGuire, SVP and SMO, Qualcomm wrote in a blogpost.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite supported 8K video playback at 60 frames per second, a feature that could see a major boost with the launch of the latest processor. Camera performance and CPU power are also expected to receive significant upgrades.

For Qualcomm, this generation is the way forward that will guide upcoming generations.

Upcoming mobile phones are also expected to come with the latest Elite Gen 5 platform including possible including Samsung Galaxy’s flagship S series, OnePlus’ flagship series. This processor is set to be positioned against the latest A19 Pro chipset announced by Apple in its iPhone 17 Pro and Air series.

“Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 isn’t just a new processor — it’s a defining moment in our premium-tier evolution. By staying true to our established naming principles — anchored in performance, timing and portfolio fit — we’re helping consumers and partners alike navigate our roadmap with clarity and confidence,” McGuire added in the post.
