Once a strong critique, now Elon Musk has partnered with Anthropic to provide computing power to the AI startup. Under the deal, SpaceX’s Colossus 1 facility in Memphis, Tennessee, will supply 300 megawatts of new capacity to Anthropic’s Claude AI within a month.

The Colossus 1 facility is a mega data centre that houses more than 220,000 Nvidia processors.

“SpaceXAI has signed an agreement with Anthropic to provide access to Colossus 1, one of the world’s largest and fastest-deployed AI supercomputers,” SpaceXAI said in a note.

With this partnership, Anthropic primarily aims to increase the usage limits for its platforms, Claude Code and the Claude API.

“We’ve agreed to a partnership with @SpaceX that will substantially increase our compute capacity. This, along with our other recent compute deals, means that we’ve been able to increase our usage limits for Claude Code and the Claude API,” Claude’s official account posted on X, announcing the deal.

“Our agreement with @SpaceX means we will use all the compute capacity at their Colossus 1 data center. This will give us over 300 megawatts of additional capacity to deploy within the month,” it added.

Notably, the deal is crucial as it marks the start of a new relationship between Anthropic’s leadership and Elon Musk, who had been critical of the AI platform.

“Frankly, I don’t think there is anything you can do to escape the inevitable irony of Anthropic ending up being misanthropic,” Musk previously wrote in a post on X.

Anthropic’s partnerships with other tech giants

However, this partnership shows Anthropic’s policy of sourcing large-scale compute power from big tech companies instead of building it themselves, which takes years and huge investments. So, this is not the first such deal the Claude maker has signed. Earlier, it had partnerships with Amazon, Google and Nvidia.

According to an official note, Anthropic has an agreement of up to 5 gigawatts (GW) with Amazon, which includes nearly 1 GW of new capacity by the end of 2026. It also has a 5 GW agreement with Google and Broadcom, which will begin coming online in 2027.

Similarly, it has a strategic partnership with Microsoft and NVIDIA that includes $30 billion of Azure capacity.

“We train and run Claude on a range of AI hardware—AWS Trainium, Google TPUs, and NVIDIA GPUs—and continue to explore opportunities to bring additional capacity online,” Anthropic said.

The AI startup is also planning to partner with SpaceX to develop multiple gigawatts of orbital AI compute capacity. “As part of this agreement, we have also expressed interest in partnering with SpaceX to develop multiple gigawatts of orbital AI compute capacity,” it said.
