EV retail sales surge 66% to record 3.28 lakh units in July as two-wheelers, passenger EVs hit new highs: FADA

India's electric vehicle (EV) transition accelerated in July 2026, with retail sales soaring 66.48% year-on-year (YoY) to a record 3,27,901 units, according to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). The performance lifted EV penetration across the automobile market to nearly 12.7%, meaning almost one in every eight vehicles retailed during the month was electric.
Growth was broad-based, with electric two-wheelers crossing the two-lakh milestone for the first time, passenger EVs posting their strongest-ever July sales and commercial EVs nearly tripling from a year ago, reinforcing the shift towards mainstream adoption.
Commenting on the performance, FADA Vice President Sai Giridhar said, "India has never bought more electric vehicles in a month than it did in July'26—3,27,901 units, up over 66% year-on-year—with nearly one in eight vehicles retailed now electric."
Two-wheelers and passenger EVs power growth
Electric two-wheeler retail sales jumped 88.32% to 2,04,362 units from 1,08,516 a year earlier, taking penetration to a record 11.2%, up from 7.7% in July 2025. TVS Motor led the segment with 55,499 registrations, up 135.24% year-on-year, followed by Bajaj Auto (45,613, +121.89%), Ather Energy (30,357, +70.22%) and Hero MotoCorp (22,900 vs 10,835 last year). Ola Electric Technologies was the only major player to post a decline, with registrations falling 23.54% to 14,106 units.
Passenger EV retail sales climbed 83.13% to 32,928 units from 17,981, lifting penetration to a record 7.9% from 5.1% a year ago despite supply constraints for popular models. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles remained the market leader with 13,678 registrations, up 103.18%, while Mahindra & Mahindra grew 126.64% to 7,742 units. JSW MG Motor India followed with 5,689 units, ahead of Maruti Suzuki (1,600) and VinFast Auto India (1,482), highlighting intensifying competition in the electric car market.
Giridhar added that while electric two-wheelers crossed the two-lakh milestone and three-wheelers have made EVs the default choice, passenger EVs grew 83% despite supply constraints. "The EV transition has stopped being a forecast. It is now a showroom reality—and Bharat is driving it," Giridhar said.
Three-wheelers dominate; commercial EVs gather pace
Electric three-wheeler retail sales rose 25.30% to 87,055 units, taking EV penetration to 65.1%, making the segment India's most electrified. Mahindra Group led with 14,191 registrations, followed by Bajaj Auto (13,442), TVS Motor (4,473), YC Electric Vehicle (2,388) and Piaggio Vehicles (1,529).
Commercial EVs remained the fastest-growing category, with retail sales surging 168.6% to 3,556 units from 1,324 in July 2025, while penetration more than doubled to 3.57% from 1.65%. Tata Motors led with 1,306 registrations, ahead of Euler Motors (777), Mahindra Group (362), Switch Mobility (192) and Olectra Greentech (133).
