Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) on Wednesday inaugurated its manufacturing plant in Talegaon, Pune, outlining plans to invest up to ₹11,000 crore in phases as it looks to expand production capacity, strengthen exports and deepen its manufacturing footprint in India.

Inaugurated by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the facility has an installed annual production capacity of 1.7 lakh units, which the automaker plans to increase to 3.2 lakh units by 2030. The expansion comes as Hyundai marks 30 years in India, with cumulative domestic passenger vehicle sales nearing 10 million and exports crossing 4 million units since 1999.

Capacity expansion and export push

The Pune plant will manufacture the all-new Hyundai Venue exclusively, with the company planning to expand exports of the model to more than 35 countries. Its production lines are designed to accommodate multiple internal combustion engine (ICE) and hybrid models in the future.

Together with its Chennai operations, Hyundai’s annual manufacturing capacity in India is expected to reach nearly 11.4 lakh units by 2030. The Pune facility also houses an engine shop with an annual production capacity of 1.5 lakh units.

Hyundai Motor India Managing Director and CEO Tarun Garg said the investment would support industrial development, innovation and employment generation in the region.

“The inauguration of our Pune plant marks the beginning of HMIL’s next chapter of growth in India. We will invest INR 11,000 crore in phases at this facility,” Garg said.

Supplier network generates 18,000 jobs

The expansion is backed by a regional supplier ecosystem comprising 55 partners that have invested nearly ₹4,600 crore in Maharashtra. Together with tier-II vendors, the network has generated more than 18,000 employment opportunities in the state, according to the company. Nearly half of Hyundai’s supplier sourcing network is located within a 50-km radius of the plant.

AI-led manufacturing and future mobility

The facility incorporates artificial intelligence-enabled production systems, predictive maintenance, digital simulations and augmented reality-based workforce training. Hyundai said the plant uses its E-FOREST digital manufacturing platform, with AI applications spanning quality inspection, defect detection, worker safety and production efficiency.

The company is also pursuing battery technology, electrification and future mobility research through partnerships with seven academic institutions in India, with nearly 40 projects underway.

Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung said the Pune plant reflected the group’s long-term commitment to India and highlighted the competitiveness of Indian manufacturing within its global operations.
