Tesla has opened reservations for its new Roadster in India, alongside the US and select other markets, while introducing a complimentary Acceleration Boost for its six-seater Model Y L SUV. The Roadster, however, is slated to enter production only in 2028, with the initial production limited to left-hand-drive vehicles, restricting its immediate relevance for Indian buyers.
The company has not disclosed the Roadster’s price in India or specified a delivery timeline for the market in its announcement dated October 17. Reservations can be made through Tesla’s official website.
The announcement comes as Tesla continues to build its presence in India, where its current vehicle portfolio comprises the Model Y and Model Y L. The company is also expanding its charging infrastructure as it seeks to strengthen its ownership proposition in the market.
Tesla describes the new Roadster as a performance-focused vehicle whose design draws inspiration from the SR-71 aircraft and F-35 fighter jet. The company says it goes beyond its Plaid performance range and incorporates SpaceX components to deliver what it calls a new driving experience. However, it has not disclosed detailed performance specifications or pricing in the India announcement.
Model Y L gets quicker acceleration, retains 681 km range
Alongside the Roadster reservations, Tesla has introduced a complimentary Acceleration Boost for the Model Y L, reducing its claimed acceleration time from zero to 100 kmph to 4.5 seconds. The six-seater SUV continues to offer a claimed driving range of up to 681 km under the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP).
The Model Y L starts at ₹61.99 lakh in India, while the Model Y is priced at ₹50.89 lakh. Tesla is also advertising financing options, with monthly instalments starting at ₹49,990 for the Model Y L and ₹39,990 for the Model Y. The indicative plans are based on a seven-year tenure, an annual interest rate of 8.5% and a step-up EMI structure, subject to financier approval and other terms and conditions.
The acceleration upgrade gives Tesla an additional feature to promote for its existing SUV lineup without announcing a change in the vehicles' starting prices.
Tesla is also offering incentives through its Refer and Earn programme. Existing owners can earn credits worth ₹11,000 for every successful referral, while new customers can receive a discount of ₹22,000 on a new Tesla. The credits can be redeemed against Supercharging, servicing and other eligible benefits.
Charging network remains a key part of expansion
Tesla said it currently has 20 Supercharger stalls and 28 Destination Charger stalls in India, with three additional sites expected by the end of 2026. The company has also enabled home charging for households across 23 states.
The expansion of charging infrastructure remains important as the company seeks to build its electric vehicle business in India. Alongside charging access, Tesla is promoting the safety credentials of its vehicles, citing ratings from organisations including the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, Euro NCAP in Europe, ANCAP in Australia and New Zealand, and C-IASI in China.
Customers can schedule test drives of the 2026 Model Y Premium Rear-Wheel Drive and Model Y L at Tesla locations in Noida, Delhi, Gurugram, Chennai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Mumbai.
