India Yamaha Motor has launched the YZF-R2 in India at a starting price of ₹2,30,500 (ex-showroom, Delhi). The motorcycle, which makes its global debut in India, is Yamaha’s first offering in the 200cc segment and will be available in three variants and five colour options.
The YZF-R2 will be sold through Yamaha’s Blue Square dealerships across India from mid-September 2026.
The base YZF-R2 is priced at ₹2,30,500 and is available in Metallic Black and Dark Bluish Gray. The YZF-R2 with the quick shifter is priced at ₹2,39,500 and comes in Matte White Pearl and Racing Blue. The range-topping YZF-R2 M costs ₹2,53,000 and is offered in Metallic Gray.
The motorcycle has been developed on an all-new platform and gets a newly developed 204cc engine made and engineered in Japan, with collaboration from Yamaha’s Indian teams. Yamaha said the YZF-R2 is aimed at riders looking for a combination of performance, technology and everyday usability.
Commenting on the launch, Mr. Hajime Aota, Chairman, Yamaha Motor India Group, said: “The launch of the YZF-R2 marks a significant milestone in Yamaha’s long-term growth strategy. The YZF-R2 is not an entry into a new segment; it is a motorcycle created for riders who are committed to the spirit of Yamaha R-series. Combining the authentic R-series DNA with lightweight performance and excellent fuel efficiency, it offers an exciting and accessible gateway to our supersport world. Inspired by the global R-Series flagship motorcycles and built on an all-new platform, the YZF-R2 reflects our confidence in India’s engineering expertise and its growing role in Yamaha’s global product strategy.”
“We are deeply grateful to our R-series customers in India for their unwavering trust and passion, which have helped make the R-series one of Yamaha’s most iconic motorcycle families in the country. Today, with over one million R-series motorcycles on Indian roads, this enduring relationship continues to inspire us to push the boundaries of innovation and performance. We are confident the YZF-R2 will build on this legacy, set a new benchmark in its segment, and inspire the next generation of Yamaha riders.”
Features and specifications of YZF-R2
The YZF-R2 uses a high-tensile steel tube diamond frame and weighs 149 kg, which Yamaha claims makes it the lightest motorcycle in its segment. The frame is inspired by the chassis dimensions of the YZF-R6 and uses a four-point engine mounting system with an additional mounting point for greater chassis stability and feedback.
Power comes from a 204cc, liquid-cooled, four-stroke, DOHC, single-cylinder, four-valve, fuel-injected engine. It produces 26.5 PS of power and 19.1 Nm of peak torque. The engine uses a finger-follower rocker-arm valvetrain with Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coating, a technology derived from Yamaha’s flagship R1.
The motorcycle gets 37 mm upside-down front forks and a rear monoshock. It also comes with 17-inch wheels, traction control, an Assist & Slipper Clutch, Yamaha Ride Control (YRC) with three riding modes: Street, Sport and Rain, and dual-channel ABS as standard.
The second variant adds Yamaha’s third-generation bi-directional quick shifter, which is a segment-first feature. The YZF-R2 M gets the quick shifter along with adjustable front forks, rear shock absorbers, clutch and brake levers. It also gets a 3D embossed emblem, faux suede-finished seat, silver-finished swingarm and shot-blasted muffler end cap.
All variants get a 5-inch full-colour TFT display with ride and navigation information. The M variant also gets a Smart Key system for keyless operation.
The YZF-R2 carries Yamaha’s latest R-series design language, with a compact bi-functional LED headlight, dual LED position lights and an aerodynamic front fairing. The rear gets a block-style LED taillight inspired by the YZF-R1, along with a MotoGP-inspired swingarm.
Yamaha said the motorcycle has been designed to balance performance and agility with everyday rideability, making it suitable for daily commuting as well as highway and track use.
