AI boom a major opportunity for Indian IT, jobs to transform not disappear: Nasscom’s Ankit Bose

The rapid global expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) presents significant growth opportunities for Indian companies and is unlikely to hurt their businesses, Ankit Bose, Head of AI at Nasscom, said on Tuesday. 

No major threat to Indian IT services 

At the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, Bose asserted that AI adoption will lead to job transformation rather than job losses. “AI is getting developed across the world, but who will deploy that? For that you need people,” he said, adding that Indian professionals are well-positioned to implement AI solutions at scale globally. 

Bose said that Indian IT and ITeS firms, which serve both domestic and international clients, need not worry about disruption from AI. Instead, he said, companies are likely to grow as demand rises for skilled talent capable of deploying AI systems worldwide. While there may be short-term turbulence, the long-term outlook remains positive.

Skilling push to build AI workforce 

To strengthen India’s AI capabilities, Bose said efforts are underway to build large-scale talent capacity. “In the next few months we are going to enable 1.5 lakh AI-based developers,” he noted, adding that Nasscom is working with the government to design AI-focused curricula for colleges. 

He stressed the importance of staying ahead of the curve by continuously upgrading skills as AI technologies evolve rapidly. 

AI a long-term investment play 

At the same session, Raju Vegesna, Chairman and Managing Director of Sify Technologies, said AI adoption is a long-term journey requiring sustained investment. “AI is not a project, it is a journey. It is going to take a lot of time,” he said. 

Vegesna highlighted the need for robust power supply to support India’s growing data centre ecosystem and underlined the substantial investments required in graphics processing units (GPUs) and infrastructure. Currently, only a handful of firms in the United States and China are making large-scale AI infrastructure investments, he noted. 

However, he said India brings key advantages to the global AI ecosystem, including scale, cost-effective skilled manpower and a focus on sustainability, positioning the country as a vital player in the AI-driven future.
