India’s green hydrogen makers begin to get firm export orders from Japan and Europe

India’s green hydrogen story is beginning to move beyond government incentives and project announcements, with binding international commercial offtake agreements emerging for Indian producers of green ammonia and green methanol. The first major export commitments are being secured by companies such as ACME Group, AM Green and Larsen & Toubro’s L&T Energy GreenTech, with Japan and Europe emerging as the first large overseas markets.
In the latest development, Hyderabad-based AM Green has been selected as the sole winner of the Asian lot in the H2Global auction run by HINT.CO GmbH (Hintco), securing a long-term purchase agreement to supply renewable ammonia to Germany. Over a period of 10 years, Hintco will purchase ammonia from AM Green for a minimum value of €585 million and may purchase additional quoted volumes using proceeds generated from the resale of green ammonia in the European market.
The ammonia will be produced at AM Green’s Kakinada project (Phase 2) in Andhra Pradesh, where the company is converting an existing natural-gas-based ammonia and urea production complex into a renewable-ammonia facility using alkaline electrolysis technology. First deliveries to Germany are expected in 2029, with the ammonia to be shipped from Kakinada Seaports, which is located directly alongside the plant.
“This landmark achievement consolidates AM Green’s position as the supplier of choice for renewable ammonia to Germany and wider Europe, and demonstrates that optimally priced green molecules can be delivered from India at an industrial scale,” said Mahesh Kolli, Group President and JMD, AM Green.
Timo Bollerhey, CEO of Hintco and co-founder of H2Global, said strong bids from serious developers demonstrated the growing maturity of renewable-ammonia projects since the pilot tender. A long-term contract, he said, gives producers such as AM Green the certainty to invest while securing reliable supply for European buyers.
Sources say the emerging export order book is being led by three Indian companies—ACME Group, AM Green and L&T Energy GreenTech—with Japan and Europe providing the first large overseas markets. Taken together, the publicly announced agreements cover up to 1.2 million tonnes a year of renewable/green ammonia and 100,000 tonnes a year of green methanol.
Europe’s first major binding India-origin green-ammonia deal came in January 2026, when AM Green Ammonia India signed a long-term agreement with German energy company Uniper. Uniper has agreed to offtake up to 500,000 tonnes a year of renewable ammonia from AM Green’s projects in India.
The first shipments are expected as early as 2028 from AM Green’s 1 million-tonne-a-year Kakinada project in Andhra Pradesh, which is under construction. The agreement gives AM Green an anchor European customer as it scales up its renewable-ammonia production capacity.
ACME Group secures agreements with two Japanese companies
ACME Group, another major Indian green-hydrogen developer, has secured agreements with two Japanese companies—IHI Corporation and Mitsubishi Gas Chemical (MGC).
In July 2026, ACME signed a long-term offtake agreement with IHI for 405,000 tonnes a year of green ammonia. ACME and IHI are developing a 405,000-tonne-a-year green-ammonia project at Gopalpur in Odisha.
The project has received support under Japan’s price-gap mechanism, with support covering 228,000 tonnes a year for 25 years beginning September 2030. The arrangement provides long-term demand visibility for a large-scale Indian green-ammonia project while helping Japanese buyers secure supplies of low-carbon ammonia.
ACME has also entered the green-methanol market with a 10-year purchase-and-sale agreement with Mitsubishi Gas Chemical. MGC will take approximately 100,000 tonnes a year of green methanol from ACME’s Odisha project once commercial operations begin, currently scheduled for 2030.
L&T Energy GreenTech (LTEGL) has also secured a major Japanese offtake agreement. In April 2026, LTEGL signed a long-term, captive take-or-pay agreement with ITOCHU Corporation for the supply of 300,000 tonnes a year of green ammonia from L&T’s proposed 300-KTPA facility at Kandla in Gujarat.
The agreement provides a firm demand anchor for the project and is aimed at supplying Japan’s emerging green-ammonia market, including applications in shipping and energy. The L&T-ITOCHU partnership began with a joint-development agreement in July 2025.
