OpenAI on Thursday unveiled ChatGPT Work, a new AI-powered workspace that combines ChatGPT, Codex and a suite of productivity tools into a single platform designed to help professionals create documents, presentations, websites, spreadsheets and software using natural language, as competition in enterprise artificial intelligence gathers pace.
The launch comes two days after Anthropic expanded its Claude Cowork AI workspace to the web and mobile, highlighting how leading AI firms are increasingly competing to become the primary software layer for workplace productivity rather than standalone chatbot providers. Anthropic had released Claude Cowork in January this year.
OpenAI described the product as “a partner for your most ambitious work,” saying it enables users to move from an initial idea to finished output within a single interface. The company said the platform can draft reports, build websites, analyse data, generate presentations and automate complex workflows without requiring programming expertise.
ChatGPT Work is aimed at white-collar professionals and integrates OpenAI’s ChatGPT with Codex, its coding assistant, allowing users to access advanced software development capabilities through simple prompts. The platform is powered by OpenAI’s latest GPT-5.6 family of models, which the company says offer improved performance while reducing computing costs. That model's launch was delayed last month at the U.S. government’s request over national security fears.
Focus shifts from chatbots to AI workspaces
The new workspace integrates with workplace applications including Gmail, Slack, Google Drive and customer relationship management software, allowing users to retrieve information, collaborate across business tools and complete multi-step projects from a single interface. Alongside ChatGPT Work, OpenAI also introduced a redesigned desktop application that brings together ChatGPT, Codex and new workflow capabilities.
“Work should feel like flow, not friction,” OpenAI said in its announcement, adding that the product is designed to help users spend less time switching between applications and more time completing tasks. The company also said ChatGPT Work is intended to “bring together everything you need to do your best work.” The rollout begins for Pro, Enterprise and Edu subscribers on desktop, web and mobile, with availability for Business and Plus users expected in the coming days.
