The loan agreement was signed on June 17, with the financing intended to support the development of transmission infrastructure that will evacuate renewable power from the Khavda renewable energy park and strengthen the country's clean energy integration into the national grid.

Powergrid said the green loan stresses its continued commitment to supporting India's energy transition while adhering to environmental, social and governance (ESG) standards.

"The facility is intended to support financing of the Khavda-Nagpur HVDC transmission project, highlighting the strategic collaboration between POWERGRID and JBIC to develop critical infrastructure for renewable energy integration," the company said in a statement.

Supporting India's clean energy goals

The company said it has integrated ESG principles into its core business operations and is working towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2047, zero waste to landfill by 2030, and becoming net water positive by 2030.

JBIC, a policy-based financial institution wholly owned by the Japanese government, supports overseas projects that contribute to Japan's international economic cooperation and sustainable development objectives.

India's largest power transmission utility

Powergrid is India's largest electric power transmission utility and one of the world's biggest transmission companies. As of May 31, 2026, it owned and operated 185,750 circuit kilometres of transmission lines and 291 substations, with a total transformation capacity of 630,516 MVA.

The company said its extra-high-voltage transmission network spans the length and breadth of the country, enabling the transfer of electricity across regions while maintaining transmission system availability of over 99.5% through automation and digital technologies. Beyond power transmission, Powergrid has also diversified into consultancy and telecommunication services.
