Reliance Consumer Products Ltd (RCPL), the FMCG arm of Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), has entered India’s ice cream market with the launch of Bombay Creamery, with prices starting at ₹10, as the company expands its consumer products portfolio into another highly competitive category.

The new brand will initially be available in western India and will subsequently be rolled out across the country, RCPL said on Tuesday. Bombay Creamery will offer products across cones, cups, tubs, bars and sticks, giving Reliance a presence across multiple consumption formats and price points.

₹10 entry point to mass-market push

The starting price puts affordability at the centre of RCPL’s entry strategy, while the company is positioning Bombay Creamery around the use of real dairy cream. The launch comes as the ice cream market has a large presence of established brands including Amul, Kwality Wall’s, Vadilal, Mother Dairy and Havmor.

RCPL said the new brand will use its existing distribution infrastructure and retail network as it expands beyond western India. The company, however, has not disclosed the investment being made in the ice cream business or set any sales or market-share targets.

Reliance bets on dairy proposition

T. Krishnakumar, Director, Reliance Consumer Products Ltd, said the company intended to build the new business around dairy ingredients rather than compromises on the product.

“We built Bombay Creamery around one simple idea that dairy shouldn't need shortcuts. RCPL is not just entering the ice cream category — we're committing to it. Made with real dairy cream, Bombay Creamery guarantees the promise of genuine taste of a real ice cream every single time, at a price every Indian family can afford,” Krishnakumar said.

The company said Bombay Creamery is made with real dairy cream and is being introduced under RCPL’s broader “Global Quality at Affordable Price” positioning.

Another category in RCPL’s expansion

The ice cream launch adds to RCPL’s growing portfolio across food, beverages, personal care and home-care products. The company has used competitive pricing and Reliance’s distribution reach as key elements of its expansion strategy across consumer categories.

For the ice cream business, the immediate challenge will be to build distribution and freezer presence while competing with brands that already have established consumer franchises. Reliance’s ability to scale the new brand through its retail network will be a key factor as Bombay Creamery moves from its western India launch to a proposed nationwide rollout.

The company has not specified when the pan-India expansion will be completed.
