Vedanta Iron And Steel Limited (VISL) is set to enter the Nifty 500 and Nifty Smallcap 250 from September 30, less than four months after its stock-market listing, as the iron and steel company moves into a major expansion phase.
The inclusion follows the latest periodic review by NSE Indices Limited and will be effective after the close of trading on September 29. VISL will also be added to the Nifty MidSmallcap 400 and Nifty Smallcap 500, taking its representation to four closely tracked NSE indices.
Index inclusion comes months after listing
VISL was among the four businesses carved out of Vedanta Ltd as part of the group’s demerger and separately listed in June 2026. The company’s entry into the Nifty 500 therefore comes relatively soon after its market debut.
The Nifty 500 comprises 500 eligible companies and serves as a broad-market benchmark. The additional inclusion in the Nifty Smallcap 250, Nifty MidSmallcap 400 and Nifty Smallcap 500 will place VISL across multiple market-cap based indices.
The company said the move is expected to broaden its visibility among investors and increase engagement with the investment community.
₹3,697 crore expansion plan in focus
Beyond the index development, VISL is entering a sizeable capital-spending cycle. The company has approved ₹3,697 crore of investment, comprising ₹2,975 crore for the first phase of the ESL expansion and ₹722 crore for its ductile iron pipe project in Goa, according to a recent Financial Express report.
The company’s broader plan is to increase steelmaking capacity from the current 3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 5 MTPA by FY29. The expansion includes a new blast furnace, pellet plant, coke oven batteries and oxygen plant at Bokaro.
Vedanta Iron & Steel CEO Pankaj Sharma said during the company’s July 30 earnings call that VISL had received Stage-I forest clearance for the Bokaro expansion and remained on track to deliver the project by the end of the financial year. He also said the Goa ductile iron pipe project was progressing and was expected to be completed later in the year.
Mining assets add to growth pipeline
The company’s expansion plans also extend to its captive mining portfolio. Bicholim’s iron ore capacity is planned to increase from 3 MTPA to 3.6 MTPA, while the 0.5 MTPA Cudnem mine is targeted for FY27 and Janthakal in Karnataka for FY28, according to the Financial Express report.
For VISL, the index inclusion thus comes against the backdrop of planned capacity additions and mining expansion, rather than as an isolated market development. The company said its operations span India and Africa and that it is pursuing an integrated iron ore and steel growth strategy.
