Senior bureaucrat Ajay Seth has officially been designated as the Finance Secretary today. The announcement was confirmed through an official order issued by the Ministry of Personnel in the evening.
“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the proposal for designating Shri Ajay Seth, IAS (KN:87), Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance as Finance Secretary,” said the official government order.
This appointment comes following the vacancy left by Tuhin Kant Pandey, who was recently appointed as the chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).
Ajay Seth, a 1987 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Karnataka cadre, has been serving as the Secretary of the Department of Economic Affairs since April 2021. He holds a B.Tech degree in Mechanical Engineering and has also earned an MBA.
Following a long-standing convention, the senior-most secretary in the Union Ministry of Finance is appointed to the position of Finance Secretary. With his new designation, Ajay Seth now assumes the role of the top bureaucrat overseeing the ministry’s operations.
Additionally, earlier this month, Seth was entrusted with the additional charge of Secretary, Department of Revenue, further expanding his responsibilities within the ministry.
