Kerala plans three-district Economic Corridor to promote space, rare earth, fisheries sectors

Kerala state government will earmark the three southern districts Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Alappuzha as the 'Southern Kerala Economic Corridor' to integrate the strengths of the region into a unified economic zone of national strategic importance.

While Thiruvananthapuram has a world-class deep-sea port at Vizhinjam and space and technology institutions, Kollam is known for rich deposits of critical mineral and rare earth deposits along the coast and Alappuzha has a blue economy of unmatched potential.

The establishment of the Corridor will see Thiruvananthapuram (Zone 1) transformed into Kerala's Knowledge and Space Technology Hub; Kollam (Zone 2) into the nerve centre for mineral processing and rare earths and Alappuzha (Zone 3) elevated as India's Blue Economy capital, V.D. Satheesan, Chief Minister of Kerala, who also holds Finance Ministry portfolio, said during his maiden Budget presentation in the State Assembly on June 19.

Satheesan said a detailed project report will be prepared through an expert agency to map out the necessary infrastructure and formulate the requisite administrative and policy interventions. An allocation of ₹100 crore was budgeted for the Rare Earth and Critical Minerals Corridor, and ₹50 crore for the Southern Kerala Economic Corridor.

Stating that modern economic growth is predominantly driven by integrated regional clusters rather than isolated projects, the Chief Minister said that by seamlessly linking logistics, technology, manufacturing, research, and natural resources into a single developmental framework, the Southern Kerala Economic Corridor will engineer a robust blended economy, attract massive private investment, and ensure Kerala’s position at the vanguard of the nation's strategic and maritime development sectors in the future.

The Budget also promises the establishment of 'Kerala Knowledge Valley' a world-class higher education hub, to bring together the most contemporary academic programmes, state-of the-art research parks, and dynamic centres of excellence under one umbrella.

This educational metropolis is meant to attract leading universities - dominating both global and national rankings, as well as world-renowned Legacy Universities and in turn transform Kerala into a premier destination for higher education, reversing the ongoing trend of students migrating outside the state for high quality learning.

Specialized research institutions emphasising satellite technology is also planned, alongside robust measures to attract more students to this cutting-edge field.
