How to Maximize Credit Card Rewards on Holiday Shopping, Travel and Groceries

Holiday sales, family trips, gifts and fuller grocery carts can make the season expensive. They can also create a chance to earn credit card rewards on spending that was already planned. The order matters. Start with the budget, then use the card that delivers the most value for that particular purchase.
A credit card can bring payments into one statement and earn rewards on eligible spends. But rewards are never a reason to spend beyond your means. A late fee or finance charge can wipe out the value of months of points. Use the card for necessary, affordable purchases, understand what qualifies and clear the statement balance in full by the due date.
Start with a holiday spending map
List likely spends under three heads: shopping, travel and groceries. Estimate the amount in each. This makes it easier to choose a card based on actual usage instead of switching cards randomly at checkout.
A family planning a trip may spend more on bookings and accommodation than on gifts. Someone staying home may see the biggest rise in supermarket and online shopping bills. There is no single best rewards credit card for everyone; its value depends on where your money goes.
Before applying for another card, review the ones you already hold. Check their category-wise reward rates, spending caps, milestone benefits, fees and redemption options. A card with a modest base rate but useful rewards on a frequent category can deliver more value than a feature-heavy card that does not fit your routine.
Match the card to category, not the advertisement
Reward programmes come with conditions. A card may offer a higher earn rate online but not on every website, or reward travel spends while excluding certain booking channels. Categories such as wallet loading, rent, insurance, fuel, government payments and tax payments may earn reduced rewards or none at all, depending on the card.
Check the terms before a large transaction. Look for merchant-category exclusions, minimum transaction values, reward caps and offer activation deadlines. A quick check can prevent the frustration of discovering that a large purchase did not qualify.
Shop with a list, not a deadline
Sale banners are designed to create urgency. A written shopping list keeps the purchase decision separate from the offer. Compare the final checkout price across reputable sellers, including delivery charges and bank-offer conditions. A discount is not a saving if it leads to a more expensive product or an unnecessary add-on.
Do not add items just to cross an offer threshold. You may collect more points while spending far more than intended. Save the offer details when cashback or bonus rewards are due later.
Look at travel rewards through the total trip cost
Compare the base fare before focusing on points. Booking directly with an airline or hotel may be cheaper than using a portal with a higher reward rate. The best option is the one with the lower total cost after all benefits are considered.
If the card includes travel privileges, check rules before leaving. Lounge access can have visit limits, guest charges or spending requirements. Foreign currency transactions may carry a markup. Insurance, where offered, has eligibility conditions and exclusions. It is much easier to understand these details at home than at the airport.
If points can be used for air miles, hotel stays, vouchers or statement credit, compare the value of each redemption route. The same number of points can be worth very different amounts.
Build a simple grocery routine
Groceries are easier to optimise because they recur every month. Use the card that gives the best eligible value at the supermarket or online platform you already use. Group planned purchases into a weekly or monthly order if that helps you track spending and offer thresholds.
Make Holiday Spends Rewarding With IndusInd Bank Credit Card
If your planned holiday spending includes regular UPI payments for groceries, dining and smaller gifts, the IndusInd Bank Platinum RuPay Credit Card is worth considering. It can be linked to UPI and offers 2 reward points for every ₹100 spent through UPI, 1 reward point for every ₹100 on non-UPI transactions, and a 1% fuel surcharge waiver. However, make sure to check reward exclusions and always pay the total outstanding by the due date to keep the benefits intact.
