BSE Ltd will enter the benchmark Nifty 50, replacing IT major Wipro Ltd, as part of a major semi-annual reshuffle of NSE's broad-market indices, NSE said on Monday.
The changes will come into effect from September 30, 2026, after the close of trading on September 29.
BSE's inclusion follows a substantial rise in its free-float market capitalisation. Its six-month average free-float market capitalisation stood at ₹1,40,879 crore, compared with ₹55,930 crore for Wipro, which was the smallest Nifty 50 constituent on the relevant measure.
Under the Nifty 50 methodology, BSE qualified for inclusion as its six-month average free-float market capitalisation was at least 1.5 times that of the smallest constituent in the eligible universe.
The next two eligible companies — TVS Motor Company and Divi's Laboratories — were not selected because the average free-float market capitalisation of the two lowest-ranked remaining Nifty 50 constituents did not meet the required threshold.
Wipro moves to Nifty Next 50
Wipro will move to the Nifty Next 50 following its exclusion from the flagship index. It will join Hitachi Energy India, Polycab India, Vedanta Aluminium Metal and Vodafone Idea in the index.
The Nifty Next 50 will also see Indian Hotels, Lodha Developers, REC, Shree Cement and United Spirits exit following their exclusion from the reconstituted Nifty 100.
The Nifty 50 replacement will also be reflected in the Nifty50 Equal Weight index.
The index changes had been anticipated by the market ahead of NSE's announcement. BSE shares ended Monday 4.04% higher at ₹3,596.80, while Wipro declined 1.29% to ₹185.11 on the NSE.
Major changes across broader indices
The reshuffle extends across several other NSE indices. The Nifty 500 will see 27 companies excluded and 27 added, with additions including Aether Industries, Avanti Feeds, Azad Engineering, Bharat Coking Coal, Clean Max Enviro Energy Solutions, Embassy Office Parks REIT, Fractal Analytics and several Vedanta entities.
The Nifty 100 will add BSE, Hitachi Energy India, Polycab India, Vedanta Aluminium Metal and Vodafone Idea.
The reshuffle will also affect midcap and smallcap indices, with companies moving between different segments based on their market-capitalisation rankings and eligibility criteria.
