India is at an inflection point in how learning happens—and it is the learner who is leading this change. A recent study in Nature’s Humanities and Social Sciences Communications finds that India’s Gen Z students are integrating AI into their daily routines, driven by a desire to enhance their skills and strengthen their career prospects. Across universities, coaching centres, and professional courses, this self-directed energy is visible everywhere—in the JEE aspirant working through a physics problem at midnight, in the MBA student refining a case analysis, in the early professional quietly upskilling between meetings.

For a country as large and diverse as India, the stakes could not be higher. For decades, one of the biggest challenges in higher education and skill development has been the gap between aspiration and access to quality instruction concentrated in too few places, personalised guidance available to too few students. AI has the potential to change that calculus. However, OpenAI’s recent Capability Gap findings offer a sharp reality check. India’s top 10 cities account for nearly half of all AI users, while representing less than 10% of the population. Access and capability, it turns out, are two different problems and solving one without the other risks a new kind of inequality, where some students learn with AI, and the rest simply use it.

As access expands, an equally important question comes into focus: “What kind of learning experiences are we actually creating?”

India’s engagement with AI offers a compelling answer. With one of the largest Generative AI user bases globally, usage here goes far beyond transactional queries. JEE aspirants use AI to unpack complex physics step by step; management students refine case-based thinking; early professionals iterate on coding and communication. They are not looking for a one-time shortcut, they are engaging with AI as a continuous companion in their learning journey.

This depth of engagement is where the real opportunity lies. AI can finally move learning beyond one-size-fits-all models, creating space for structured, individualised exploration. A learner struggling with a concept can receive multiple explanations until it clicks, while a working professional can quietly build new skills alongside their day-to-day responsibilities.

These are meaningful shifts, pointing to a future where learning is shaped around individual progress and intent. At the same time, they demand a candid conversation about ethical use. The broader discourse has rightly raised questions about academic integrity, data privacy, and the temptation of the shortcut. Learning is ultimately about understanding the process, building intuition, and developing the capacity to think independently, and no guardrail substitutes for that.

Recognising these challenges, AI companies are increasingly focussed on building safety frameworks into their tools designed to mitigate bias, protect user privacy, and nudge the AI towards acting as a constructive tutor rather than simply doing the homework. But technological guardrails are only half the equation. The other half is a cultural shift toward ethical adoption, one that institutions, educators, and learners need to drive together.

In higher education and professional learning environments, that shift is beginning. There is growing emphasis on designing assignments that demand original thinking, on using AI to complement rather than

replace teaching, and on giving both learners and educators structured guidance on how to engage with these tools effectively. Familiarity grows with time, but institutional intent ensures the focus stays on authentic capability-building.

With that foundation in place, a further possibility opens up the ability to understand learning continuously. Traditionally, higher education and exam preparation have relied on periodic, high-stress assessments to measure progress. AI offers something different: an ongoing, granular picture of how learners engage with ideas, where they are improving, and where they need support before the moment of crisis, not after.

For India, these developments come at a crucial time. The country has one of the largest populations of higher education learners and competitive exam aspirants in the world. Efforts across universities and skilling platforms are hyper-focused on preparing individuals for a technology-driven future.

The true opportunity today is in making education more engaging, personalised, and securely aligned with how individuals actually learn. In that journey, AI is a tool for exploration, understanding, and building a learner’s confidence in their own abilities. And that may be its most important role of all.
