As we edge closer towards a hyperconnected world, a silent revolution is unfolding at the intersection of artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things. Known as Edge AI, this paradigm shift promises to transform how data is processed, interpreted and acted upon, ushering in an era where intelligence is no longer confined to the cloud but is distributed to the very edges of the network.

At its core, Edge AI refers to the deployment of AI models and algorithms directly on edge devices rather than routing data through centralised cloud servers. This architectural shift enables real-time decision-making at the source, ensuring lower latency, enhanced privacy, and robust system efficiency. As the global ecosystem braces for over 75 billion connected devices by 2025, the need for such distributed intelligence is more pressing than ever.

India's Top 100 Billionaires

August 2025

As India continues to be the world’s fastest-growing major economy, Fortune India presents its special issue on the nation’s Top 100 Billionaires. Curated in partnership with Waterfield Advisors, this year’s list reflects a slight decline in the number of dollar billionaires—from 185 to 182—even as the entry threshold for the Top 100 rose to ₹24,283 crore, up from ₹22,739 crore last year. From stalwarts like Mukesh Ambani, Gautam Adani, and the Mistry family, who continue to lead the list, to major gainers such as Sunil Mittal and Kumar Mangalam Birla, the issue goes beyond the numbers to explore the resilience, ambition, and strategic foresight that define India’s wealth creators. Traditional cloud computing, while scalable, has its limitations, particularly in latency-sensitive applications. Sending every byte of raw data to the cloud introduces not just delays but also security vulnerabilities and bandwidth strain. Edge AI circumvents these challenges by empowering devices to process and analyse data locally, minimising the need for constant connectivity and long-distance transmission.

Edge AI is emerging as the beating heart of innovation, especially in personal audio devices like true wireless stereo (TWS) earbuds, headphones, and smartwatches. As consumers demand more personalised, responsive, and privacy-conscious experiences, device makers are moving intelligence from the cloud to the device itself. These devices are all being reimagined to process complex AI workloads locally. Most of these still rely heavily on cloud backends. Edge AI unlocks the potential to move beyond this reliance, offering real-time responsiveness, cost efficiency and personalised feedback, which are critical elements in use cases such as health and fitness tracking.

In devices like earbuds and smartwatches, Edge AI enables instantaneous responses to voice commands, smarter health tracking and adaptive sound environments, all without relying on external servers or persistent connectivity. Features like adaptive noise cancellation are being reengineered to learn from a user’s surroundings in real time, delivering sharper and more immersive audio experiences that evolve with the environment. Another major leap comes in personalised audio tuning. AI models, trained on individual hearing profiles and even ear canal geometry, are allowing audio devices to deliver sound experiences that are truly unique to each user. This is particularly relevant in India, where varied ambient environments from crowded metros to quiet rural pockets require devices to adapt to their surroundings intelligently.

Edge AI is also unlocking a new wave of wellness features in wearable tech. Smartwatches and hearables embedded with health and motion sensors are now capable of measuring vital signs, tracking sleep, detecting falls and even flagging signs of stress, all processed locally on the device. These capabilities are critical in scenarios where real-time feedback can be life-saving, especially in a country like India with its rapidly growing wearable health tech adoption. By keeping health data on-device, brands also address growing consumer anxiety around data security and privacy, while ensuring compliance with emerging regulations such as India’s Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act. Edge AI offers not only peace of mind, but a clear regulatory advantage in global markets with strict data laws, including the EU and parts of North America.

For value-conscious markets such as India, where affordability is as critical as innovation, Edge AI brings significant cost advantages. On-device processing reduces cloud dependency, lowers recurring server costs and leads to more energy-efficient and battery-optimised products. This efficiency is pivotal in expanding access to smart audio and wearable devices among India’s vast and diverse user base. Additionally, reduced latency and uninterrupted functionality even in areas with patchy internet connectivity make Edge AI particularly suited for India’s urban and rural hybrid landscape.

Chipmakers are embedding AI capabilities directly into system-on-chips (SoCs), while lightweight frameworks like TensorFlow Lite, Edge Impulse, and ONNX are empowering developers to design AI features natively for resource-constrained devices. This support is enabling a wave of device-level AI integration, making it easier for Indian OEMs and startups to experiment, iterate, and scale.

As generative AI matures, the line between functional device and intelligent companion will blur even further. The next wave of smart personal devices will likely feature real-time translation, mood sensing, predictive wellness alerts, and context-aware coaching, all enabled by Edge AI. These enhancements are not gimmicks, but essential features in a world where users expect more from technology in terms of more awareness, security and intimacy.

Edge AI is no longer just a back-end upgrade; it is becoming the core enabler of intelligent, personal technology experiences. For the Indian personal tech market, already one of the world’s fastest growing, this shift promises to spark a new era of innovation, where smart devices are not just connected, but conscious.
