Ananya Birla & Aryaman Birla
Chairperson, Svatantra Microfin and Director, Aditya Birla Mgmt Corp. | Director, Aditya Birla Mgmt Corp.About
Kumar Mangalam Birla’s children are shaping the future of the Aditya Birla Group from two directions. While Aryaman Vikram Birla is spearheading the conglomerate’s renewable energy, fashion and lifestyle, hospitality and ventures businesses, expanding their footprint through acquisitions and organic expansion, Ananya Birla is building new-age consumer and financial services businesses from scratch. Together, they are on the board of Aditya Birla Management Corp. Pvt. Ltd, the apex body that provides strategic direction to group firms while also making investment decisions. They are also on the boards of Grasim, Hindalco, Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Ltd (ABFRL) and Aditya Birla Lifestyle Brands Ltd (ABLBL). Aryaman, who joined the group in 2019, has played a central role in negotiating two of the group’s biggest transactions—the acquisition of Shell-backed Sprng Energy by Aditya Birla Renewables, and the purchase of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) franchise. The Sprng acquisition more than doubled the group’s renewable energy capacity from 4.3 GW to 9.4 GW, setting the stage for a 20-GW platform. “We thought it was a very good time for us to double down on the sector, and be a very meaningful player in this growth story,” says Aryaman. He also oversees the group’s fashion and lifestyle business—recently demerged into two listed companies, ABFRL and ABLBL—with emphasis on disciplined capital allocation, AI-led merchandising, and stronger brand-building, rather than chasing scale alone. On RCB, Aryaman views cricket as a long-term consumer business. “The IPL was very much a proxy play for the Indian consumer and the Indian consumer story,” he says, describing sports franchises as resilient, scarce assets with predictable cash flows. He is the chairman designate of RCB. Ananya, meanwhile, has carved out an identity of her own. She founded Svatantra Microfin at just 17, and completed the acquisition of Chaitanya India Fin from Sachin Bansal’s Navi Group in November 2023. The merger created the country’s second-largest NBFC-MFI with an AUM of `22,000 crore. The company is now preparing for a `3,000-crore IPO. Ananya has also forayed into the beauty business with Birla Cosmetics, launching the fragrance label Contraband and cosmetics brand Lovetc. She also oversees Aditya Birla Real Estate. Her approach blends technology, consumer psychology, and cross-functional thinking. “The Aditya Birla Group has always had the courage to evolve, and I see my role as helping accelerate that evolution by bringing new ideas and future-focussed thinking,” says Ananya. One of the new initiatives she is excited about is Birla AI Labs. “Our vision is to help future-proof the group by embedding AI across businesses,” she adds. The siblings are united by a common thread: identifying emerging opportunities early and building businesses with a long-term perspective.
