About

Neville Tata’s rise as one of the Tata Group’s most influential consumer business executives has been understated. Avoiding the spotlight, he has quietly transformed businesses, with a focus on profitability throughout his 10-year career with the group. His defining contribution came at Trent, where he helped scale Zudio from an experimental value-fashion chain into one of India’s fastest-growing retail brands. Neville joined Trent in 2016, initially overseeing the packaged foods and beverages business, before taking charge of Zudio’s expansion. He reshaped value fashion through affordable pricing, rapid merchandise refreshes and a lean operating model, aimed at the aspirational middle-class. The strategy delivered results. As of March 31, 2026, Zudio had expanded to 963 stores across 313 cities, adding 212 outlets in FY26 alone, and emerging as Trent’s growth engine. In 2024, Neville was assigned as head of Star Bazaar, the group’s food and grocery retail business, a far more demanding assignment. Grocery retail operates on wafer-thin margins amid competition from quick-commerce platforms, modern retailers and neighbourhood stores. Neville is focussing on strengthening assortments, improving supply-chain efficiency, expanding private labels and enhancing the omnichannel shopping experience. The Tata-Tesco JV operates 84 stores across 12 cities, with an emphasis on in-house brands. Neville’s growing stature was reinforced in November 2025 when he was inducted as a trustee of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, and also into the boards of allied Tata Trusts, signalling the gradual induction of the next generation into governance.
