The late Big Bull Rakesh Jhunjhunwala would never leave a chance to show his witty side, and on innumerable occasions he would refer to his wife, Rekha, as the pillar of strength, emotional support and simplicity. “Never ever argue with your wife or the market,” he had said in an interview. Since his demise in 2022, Rekha has quietly emerged as India’s richest women investor with a portfolio valued at ₹63,000 crore comprising 27 listed companies. While the primary source of her wealth comes through listed equities, investments have been made in alternative assets, including real estate and private equity. Rekha has preferred to nurture the legacy of her late husband by staying away from the public spotlight and limiting her primary involvement to philanthropic initiatives. She is the force behind St. Jude India ChildCare Centres, Agastya International Foundation, and Sankara Eye Hospital among others. In fact, in 2023, Ashoka University launched the Rakesh Jhunjhunwala School of Economics and Finance, with an aim to advance research on inclusive and equitable development. “There is no better way to celebrate his legacy,” Rekha had said at the launch in memory of her husband who was closely associated with the university since 2016.
