Few figures in Indian media command the respect and influence that Shobhana Bhartia does. She was one of the youngest women to have led a national newspaper as chief executive. At the helm for more than four decades, Bhartia has set benchmarks for leadership, governance, and editorial excellence. Known for her exacting standards and meticulous attention to detail, she is a leader who believes that excellence lies in the finer details. Whether it is flagship properties such as the HT Leadership Summit or the strategic direction of the media group, she is deeply involved in ensuring that every initiative reflects the highest standards of quality and relevance. Yet, her leadership style is equally defined by trust—once convinced of a vision or course of action, she empowers her teams with the confidence and autonomy to execute it independently. A recipient of the Padma Shri, she was a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha from 2006 to 2012. She contributes to academia and public policy through advisory roles at the London School of Economics and the Blavatnik School of Government, and serves as the pro-chancellor of the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani. She has also been a member of parliamentary committees on energy, women’s empowerment, and human resources development.
