Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has become “part of everyday life” in India, the finance ministry stated as the instant payment platform clocked a record 23.66 billion transactions in July, highlighting the scale and speed of the country’s digital payments adoption.

"Every scan tells a story. From students and small businesses to families and entrepreneurs, millions of Indians have embraced UPI as a part of daily life," the ministry said in a post on X.

The ministry said what began as a payment system in 2016 has grown into a nationwide digital payments network, with UPI now used for transactions ranging from payments to local vendors and grocery purchases to splitting bills.

July transaction volume rises 22% year-on-year

Notably, UPI processed 23.66 billion transactions worth ₹29.88 lakh crore in July, according to data from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). Transaction volume increased 4.1% from 22.72 billion in June and 22% compared with July 2025.

Transaction value also expanded, rising 3.3% month-on-month and 19% year-on-year. The July numbers mean UPI processed an average of about 763 million transactions every day, with average daily transaction value at roughly ₹96,383 crore.

UPI’s scale expands beyond metros, digital payments gain global footprint

The latest numbers underline the rapid expansion of UPI since its launch in 2016. Over the years, the platform has become central to India’s digital public infrastructure, enabling interoperable payments across banks and payment applications.

Government data shows UPI processed 24,161.69 crore transactions worth ₹314.23 lakh crore during FY26. The number of users had reached 55.49 crore by June 2026, reflecting the widening reach of the payment ecosystem.

The Finance Ministry also stated that UPI has already been introduced in several overseas markets, including the UAE, Singapore, France, Mauritius and Sri Lanka.

"Innovation is when technology becomes invisible in everyday life. A QR code. A phone. A few taps. Payment done," the ministry said, describing the evolution of UPI over the past decade.

The government recently said the next phase of UPI's growth will focus on bringing more users and merchants into the ecosystem, supported by policy measures, technological advancement and greater financial inclusion.
