India's residential rooftop solar segment received a major endorsement on Tuesday as former India cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni invested in SolarSquare through his family office, Midas Deals, joining the company's recently announced $53 million Series C funding round. Alongside the investment, Dhoni has also been appointed as the company's brand ambassador, signalling growing investor confidence in India's rapidly expanding clean energy ecosystem.
The investment comes at a time when rising electricity tariffs, increasing awareness of renewable energy and supportive government policies are accelerating the adoption of rooftop solar systems among homeowners. Founded in 2015, SolarSquare has already installed rooftop solar systems in more than 50,000 homes across 29 cities and now plans to use the fresh capital to scale its footprint and strengthen its technology-led offerings.
Expansion plans fuel next phase of growth
SolarSquare said the proceeds from its Series C funding will be deployed to expand operations into 30-40 additional cities, deepen its technology platform, widen financing options for customers and enhance its customer service infrastructure. The company provides end-to-end residential rooftop solar solutions, covering consultation, installation, financing, monitoring and long-term maintenance, enabling homeowners to transition to clean energy with a single service provider.
Commenting on the investment, Dhoni said, "For me, this is much bigger than investing in a company. It's about investing in India's future. Energy security and clean energy are priorities that will define India's next decade, and residential solar has an important role to play. What gave me the confidence to come on board was the founders' commitment to building for the long term. That's why I am excited to join the SolarSquare mission as both an investor and brand ambassador."
Welcoming the cricket legend, SolarSquare Co-founder and CEO Shreya Mishra said, "We are honoured to welcome MS Dhoni as an investor and brand ambassador at SolarSquare. Over two decades, he has held the trust and expectations of a billion Indians and that is exactly the benchmark of trust we want to build with our customers. He is also someone who cares deeply about India and the climate, and genuinely believes in what we are building at SolarSquare."
Clean energy sector gains momentum
The association also underscores growing investor interest in India's residential clean energy market, where rooftop solar adoption is gathering pace amid higher household power consumption and a stronger push towards energy independence. Recognised in TIME Magazine's World's Best Greentech Companies 2025 list and Forbes Asia's 100 to Watch 2025, SolarSquare is looking to capitalise on the next phase of growth in India's distributed renewable energy market as demand for residential solar solutions continues to strengthen.
